About silk painting: I use a water-based resist (also called gutta) in a squeeze bottle to draw the outlines as the first step, and then mix colors of silk dye and use Asian calligraphy brushes to paint in the colors. Painted on 100% crepe de chine silk. Next it will be steamed to set the colors, now that it's all done.
My silk painting process for one of my tarot / altar cloths.

(Sorry about the couple of gaps, when the camera shut off...)

I loved painting this piece! I'm so angry about the gap in the filming. (I'll get this video thing figured out some day). This is going to be framed as a wall piece, most likely. It's the same process used in my tarot/altar cloths.

Here's a new painting, a bigger more detailed piece than the others I've posted here. It's kind of a long video - it took ages to paint, hence the wardrobe change and time of day lighting shifts.
About the process: I use a water-based resist (also called gutta) to draw the outlines as the first step, and then mix colors of silk dyes and use sumi brushes to paint in the colors. I sprinkle salt on some sections to give it a raindroppy visual texture. Painted on 100% crepe de chine silk. Next it will be steamed to set the colors, now that it's all done.

Hi! Here is my awkward self in the first of a series about silk painting. I get asked often about the painting process and how to learn silk painting, so I thought some videos were in order. I'll do future installments with details on various aspects of the painting process. Let me know if you have questions or specific topics you'd like to hear about.
Cheers!

My process (sped up so it doesn't take ages), for hand painting one of my silk mandala altar cloths. This is 100% crepe de chine silk.
It's a water-based resist (or gutta) that I use to draw the outlines in the first step, and then mix silk dyes and use sumi brushes to paint in the colors.
And it will be steamed to set the colors, now that it's all done.
I posted the finished piece on etsy here:

Here's a new silk painting, a green mandala.
Next time I'll put the camera on the other side, so my hand isn't so much in the way. But it's too late for this, so I'll upload this as it is anyway.

Here's a new silk painting, a navy tree with a mandala moon. This'll be a wall piece, or maybe a tarot cloth, I haven't decided yet...
