Jion 慈恩 meaning 'Temple Sound' is one of the five brown belt kata practiced in Shotokan, Jion is the scond longest brown belt kata after Kanku Dai. In this black belt shotokan kata tutorial, we are going to cover the first three moves of Chinte Kata Step By Step.
Chinte (珍手) (Unusual Hand)
Chinte is a very old kata probably originating from China, but there are other versions of the history of Chinte.
Unlike many Shotokan karate kata, Chinte has many circular movements.
Men are generally stronger than women, but ladies kata flows much better than the mens, that's just my opinion.
Men seem to struggle more with the smooth circular techniques.
Ladies seem to flow with these circular techniques.
I know several Shotokan Dojo have made the circular techniques more linnear.
In this tutorial I will make more circular movements, but in other tutorials we show a more direct path for these circular kata moves.
Chinte Kata Step By Step
The yoi (ready position) for Chinte, is feet together, left hand in the middle of the body with the right hand on top.
The left fist is palm facing up and the right fist is palm facing the body.
Try not to wrap your arms around your body, instead have the left elbow pointing directly to the left and the right elbow pointing directly to the right.

In this short tutorial Sensei Huckle explains the first move of Shotokan karate brown belt kata Jion. Sensei talks about contraction and expansion. Sensei talks about bouncing the arms and driving back with the left leg, whilst at the same time driving forward with the uchi uke and gedan barai.
On the first move of Jion, try and keep the body weight forward and drive the left leg back sharply like a kick. In the video below, Sensei Huckle explains this 1st move in much more detail and explains how the whole body, legs and arms work together to produce a very dynamic and explosive first move to the kata.

Hangetsu is said to be the oldest karate kata, with the original name being seisan. Master Gichin Funakoshi changed the name from Seisan to Hangetsu and then added the kata into the Shotokan cirriculam. Hangetsu-dachi (half-moon stance) is the essence of this kata, semi circular stepping (half moon) combined with breathing and expansion and contraction. Hangetsu kata consists of 41 movements and the older Okinawan version of this kata is known as Seisan (thirteen).
Neko Ashi Dachi (cat stance) is also used for the first time.
The breathing in Hangetsu should be deep and should be combined with the muscles contraction and expansion. Along with contracting the muscles try and stretch the muscles, rather than pulling everything in.
Try and expand your stomach out when breathing in, then tighten and pull the stomach in when we breathed out, my Sensei used to say this will help use the whole of the lungs, instead of just shallow breathing using the top of the lungs and make your Hara strong.
Hangetsu should be explored in detail and practiced often. This kata also gives the karateka a total mind and body workout. On the slow techniques the muscles tighten over a few seconds, with the body like steel at the completion of the technique, then relax breathe in and start the next technique. My Sensei had a unique breathing rythm for moves 7,8,9 and 10, which we will go into detail in this Hangetsu tutorial.

Being too eager to respond to opponent’s action, whether it means the attack or block that is too early, gives the other side strategic advantage. What it means is that initiating (attacking) side can invest less energy in order to receive more energy from blocking side in return. In other words attacking side uses less commitment to fully engage the other which brings similarity to typical Sasoi-waza (one of the forms of set up). In our drill the attacking side maintains full control over the technique and withdraws from it upon the contact with the blocking arm. The energy of initial punch is then used for the block and another attack. It is important to remember that average punch lasts close to 0.2 sec which may seem short but leaves enough time for skilled karateka to adjust to changing circumstances. Naturally it requires synchronized action of mind, body and breath.

Heian Nidan is the second of five kata in the Heian kata series and is used as the testing kata from 8th Kyu to 7th Kyu here at EIKA.
Lots of simultaneous block and counter techniques throught Heian Nidan. This kata is a big step up from Heian Shodan in terms of the level of technicality. Because of this Karateka focus more on the latter Heian kata, than they do on Heian Shodan and this is a mistake!
Heian Shodan is probably the most important Heian Kata, make sure you continually practice the early Shotokan kata.
Back to Heian Nidan. On the first move try and drop the body weight straight down, so the majority of the body weight is over the right leg, then on the fourth move sharply transfer the body weight to the left leg. Many karateka simply keep the body weight in the center for the first six moves.
On the first kiai, osae uke (pressing block) and nukite (spearhand), make sure the block is slightly ahead of the nukite, but only slightly. A mistake that karateka make on this move is they strike down with a shuto, instead of striking straight forward with nukite, the bottom of the right hand, wrist and forearm should slide over the top of the back of the left hand.
After the four shuto uke there are several different ways Shotokan Dojo practice the next eight move combination and although karateka practice different ways, the basic fundamentals remain the same and one of them is keeping the weight going forward, try not to lean back at all.

3. Finish with gyaku zuki chudan
Working on shomen and hanmi, hikite and the snap back of gyakuzuki.
Try and stay relaxed throughout the movement, with kime only for a split second at the end of each technique.
