As Portland residents have started speaking out against far-left politicians over the homeless crisis and crime surge fueling an exodus from the city, a local real estate broker is describing the difficulty of offloading these for-sale properties.
"A lot of these spaces now are occupied by camps, and a lot of the homeowners now have changing circumstances," Dwell Realty broker George Patterson said on a "Mornings with Maria" panel Wednesday.
According to the housing market expert, homeowners and potential buyers are "full of concerns" about the growth of homeless camps within residential neighborhoods, and it’s also causing a pricing shift.
"They're looking at their lives and wondering, ‘How long do I continue to live here?’" Patterson noted. "And they're saying, ‘Should I live here? Should I find a home somewhere else?’ And they're picking somewhere else."
In Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood, a bizarre incident unfolded involving unauthorized occupants in a rental property. A landlord discovered a couple had moved into her vacant unit without permission, drastically altering the interior. The pair reportedly removed the flooring and installed unconventional features like a stripper pole, using the space for activities linked to their OnlyFans account. This situation escalated when the property owner involved law enforcement to address the unauthorized occupancy.
The case highlights a growing tension in Seattle's rental market, exacerbated by the pandemic's impact on the legal and housing systems. With King County grappling with a backlog of nearly 600 eviction cases, the landlord faced a potential financial crisis. However, this incident deviated from typical landlord-tenant disputes due to the absence of a lease, classifying it as trespassing rather than a civil matter. The involvement of the Seattle Police Department and the eviction of the squatters marked a significant turn in resolving the issue, underscoring the challenges property owners face in managing their assets amidst complex legal and social dynamics.
This incident raises critical questions about property rights, tenant protections, and the responsibilities of landlords and law enforcement in dealing with housing-related disputes. As Seattle continues to navigate these challenges, the balance between protecting tenant rights and ensuring property owners' security remains a contentious and evolving issue.

As retail theft continues to escalate in cities like San Francisco, large corporate stores are going to extraordinary lengths to tackle the issue. Case in point: Best Buy in San Francisco now has its own police officer, courtesy of the city's 10B plan. Under this arrangement, businesses cover overtime costs for officers plus an administrative fee to the city. This move has been met with a mixture of skepticism and approval, fueling a broader debate on whether stationing law enforcement officers in retail stores is an effective or sensible solution. Especially in a city where the police force is already stretched thin, the strategy raises questions about prioritization. Should large corporations like Best Buy be able to "buy" their own security detail while smaller stores, unable to afford this luxury, suffer? Also, what kind of message does it send to consumers when they roll up to a store guarded like a fortress?
While some critics argue that the presence of a uniformed officer won't deter seasoned criminals, it does add an extra layer of safety for employees and shoppers. On the flip side, it also illustrates a stark divide between the "haves" and the "have-nots" in the business world. It's a sign of the times that Best Buy and other large corporations can afford such heavy-duty security measures, while smaller businesses, already hit hard by recent economic challenges, have to fend for themselves. If anything, this move by Best Buy spotlights the widening gap in resources available to different sectors of the business community and underscores the desperation of some businesses to maintain some semblance of law and order in their establishments.

A King County judge has ordered the state to pay a man, who is accused in two separate attacks at a light rail station and bus stop in Seattle, $250 for each day he is not admitted for treatment.
Alexander Jay was charged with second-degree assault for allegedly throwing a woman down several flights of stairs at the light rail station in the Chinatown-International District. He was also charged with first-degree assault after a stabbing at a nearby bus stop that same day as the alleged light rail attack.
In April, Jay was deemed incompetent to stand trial and he was ordered to spend the next three months in an inpatient facility until he understands the charges made against him.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams, in a surprising move, has called for every US city to share the load in accommodating migrants. Facing an increasingly overwhelming influx of newcomers, Adams has proposed this radical plan as New York grapples with thousands of new arrivals each day. Ironically, his 'share the love' approach emerges while his city, a proclaimed sanctuary, struggles to maintain its pledge amidst the sheer pressure of numbers and logistical challenges. Adams' suggestions are a stark contrast to his earlier rhetoric, revealing an interesting twist in his narrative.
On the surface, this request to distribute migrants across all US cities might seem like a reasonable proposition. However, it unravels a deeper issue - the unrelenting tide of people crossing the southern border. The mayor's solution implies that New York, despite its sanctuary status, is feeling the strain from this surge, echoing the concerns of border states that have been grappling with this reality for years. Amidst his concerns about housing and resource allocation, the essence of the sanctuary city appears to be wavering, replaced by pleas for nationwide assistance.
Adding another layer of complexity to this issue is the reopening of many of the city's shuttered hotels to serve as migrant shelters. As NYC houses more and more asylum seekers, questions of sustainability and long-term implications rise. The mayor’s move serves as a poignant reminder that the immigration issue continues to strain the resources and capacities of not just border towns, but also major cities across the country.

When it comes to the sky-high drama of an off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot accused of attempting to shut down an aircraft's engines mid-flight, you'd think we'd all boarded a plane to the Twilight Zone instead of San Francisco. The flight, originating from Everett and later diverted to Portland, thankfully had no injuries to report—probably because the passengers didn't waste time earning their sky marshal badges. They subdued the errant pilot, who was seated just behind the cockpit, before anything serious occurred. Everyone walked away with a travel voucher, which is a deal you'd almost think worthy of a late-night infomercial: "Subdue a rogue pilot, get your next trip on us!"
It's a slap in the face for anyone who thinks lawlessness only thrives on the city streets. Don't need to be in an alley to find bad intentions; even at 30,000 feet, quick action by alert citizens can make all the difference. This is a prime example that disruptors can pop up anywhere, and it's not only up to law enforcement to keep things under wraps. It’s the shared responsibility of everyone—whether you’re grounded or soaring through the clouds—to keep your eyes peeled for the safety of the community.

In a bold move escalating tensions with the federal government, Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered the Texas National Guard to seize Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, effectively blocking U.S. Border Patrol access. This action follows Abbott's emergency order granting the state guard "full control" over the park, situated along the Rio Grande, a critical point in Texas' battle against illegal border crossings.
The standoff comes amidst Abbott's aggressive strategy to curb illegal immigration, including the implementation of river barriers along the Rio Grande and empowering local law enforcement to arrest migrants. The Biden administration, challenging these measures, recently sued Texas, arguing that Abbott's policies infringe upon federal authority over border enforcement.
Eagle Pass Mayor Ronaldo Salinas expressed disapproval of the state's unilateral decision, highlighting local officials' concerns about legality and jurisdiction. Meanwhile, the Texas government remains steadfast, with spokesperson Renae Eze affirming the state's commitment to employing all means necessary to address what they perceive as President Biden's inadequate response to the border crisis.

Retailers and logistics experts have warned that supply-chain problems will make certain items more expensive or difficult to obtain this holiday season. They're urging people to start shopping early, well before Black Friday, if they want to ensure they have presents — and a tree to put them under.
"Supply-chain disruptions have really been impacting the retail industry since the start of the pandemic," Katherine Cullen, National Retail Federation's senior director of industry and consumer insights, told Insider.
The problems have been piling up for over a year and a half, compounding one another. "There are many links, and if a link is broken, then the stuff doesn't move," said Rosemary Coates, president of Blue Silk Consulting and a global trade expert. She calls it a supply-chain reaction.

Almost 275 police officers have left the Seattle Police Department since 2020. The staffing crisis has never been worse, with the lowest number of deployable staff since the 1980s.
This year, a total of 84 officers separated from the SPD, with 18 leaving in May, according to a police source. A separation is an all-inclusive term that includes resignations, retirements, and lateral moves to other agencies.
The latest data puts total separations at a minimum of 270 since 2020. If this pace holds up, the SPD will far exceed last year’s historic numbers. And we’re headed into the summer, where separations have historically spiked.
