Although this episode was recorded months ago, what I said in it still rings true to me in many ways: my love for family, the work I've had to do to get better at communicating, as well as the boundaries I have learned and the mentors who have led me. I considered myself an introvert who didn't need people as much and that really made me see myself differently. I might even go as far as to say that nearly every bad decision I made that impeded the relationships in my life were as a result of how I saw myself. With time, I am learning to let go of many of those bad habits. It still hurts when someone thinks I'm pretending or when I lose a friend, but it's no longer just about me; they too have a role to play in it. It takes two to tango, they say.
In this episode, I go on a rant about these facets of my relationship including family, siblings, parents, and mentors. I attempt to provide an answer to: "how do you find mentors?" Of course, I do a terrible job and go on a tangential rant which I chose to let be because I believe you'll find value in it. I also wonder if you have a best friend because I talk about my buddy Tsi, and how high school was a major change for me.
Plus, I 'd love to know if you think it's really possible to have a relationship with 5000 people on Facebook. Do you ever do things to please people? What is your "space of commonality"? When do you need to be intentional in your relationships?

This month has been a mess for me. In a good way.
I kept saying was going to record videos. Kept saying I'd catch up, batch record, and schedule posts. Then a few things happened.
First, my work schedule changed - I work 10 hours on most days of the week. My body still has a hard time on workdays.
Next, I found myself in a conversation that shook my core. Two of them actually. I started doubting my identity and who I thought I was.
Finally, I stumbled upon a piece of information that helped me make sense of all this in a way that allowed me to start taking action towards growth.
While all these external and internal changes were happening, I was on autopilot and basic self-care: doing what needed my attention the most and letting everything else slide.
It's not in my nature. Which is how I know it was good.
In the end, I found that April was coming to a close and I hadn't made any videos.

1. You haven’t done your homework. The last thing people need is to tell you things you can Google.
2. You know everything: Your arrogance leaves little room for the humility required for people to even bother with you.
3. You haven’t done anything with what they gave you in the past: Why share more or help more when you’ve done nothing with the previous advice or assistance?
4. You want them to find, chew, swallow, and be grateful for you: Stop asking for people to become unpaid interns at the job of YOUR life.
5. You expect them to help: Because someone is ahead of you in life or has more money or experience doesn’t mean they have to help you. This expectation, mixed with your arrogance, makes it hard for anyone to empathize with your situation.

So, there won't be an episode of #theweekenddebate today Saturday July 10th.
This video ( and the article I read in it) , explains why. The short version is that my current struggle with the immigrant path is taking a toll, and I'm going hiking with my friends Jerod and Taylor.
Excerpt:
"As a kid, I always knew I’d leave Cameroon to pursue my education. My older cousins had left, and talks about higher education in the country were hopeless. I was the firstborn son, so it only made sense that my parents would go into debt, borrow from “ndjangui houses” (community credit unions), and find a way for me to join my cousins in Germany or the U.S.
The image of my impending escape was so clear that when I turned 17 and finished secondary school, but didn’t leave Cameroon, I had no idea what to do with my life anymore. It crushed me so hard that I almost never took the leap of faith to move to the U.S. again. At 17, I lost all hopes of building a future in my own country — partly because I let my parents’ insistence on college overshadow my own ambitions, but also because I didn’t have a backup plan if my dream of leaving the country failed.
When I moved on to college, the usual adventures followed. I lost my virginity, found friendships, drank myself into a stupor. I broke hearts, and I got my heart broken. Over the next few years, I became who I thought was, on my own terms. I had an identity and some image of what I thought my life meant. Discussions about the meaning of life, our roles as humans, and our place in society aren’t conversational staples in Cameroonian culture. Yet, fed by the largely American content I consumed, I gravitated to introspection — something that molded my perspective then, and even more now as an immigrant".
