Making your own canvas panels is a great cost-saver when it comes to being a painter. This is how I make mine with my own homemade gesso primer.
Before the invention of oil painting on sailcloth canvas, artists during and before the Renaissance Period commonly painted on solid wooden panels.
These were carefully selected pieces of hardwood, and painstakingly sized with hide glues and primed with gypsum or lead-based primers, in preparation for egg tempera or oil painting.
Today, making your own canvas panels for oil painting (or acrylic) is so easy to do.

Please check out: https://www.damianosborne.com/painting-the-skin-tone-painting-the-figure-part-3 for more detailed information about the oil painting process I used in this video, particularly scumbling and glazing in oil paint, and the pigments for painting the skin tone.
There's more in-depth info on my blog not included in this video.
Painting the skin tone in oils shows figure painting in the classical technique of the Venetian and Flemish Old Masters. In this video, I am painting the second layer, or the overpainting layer. I use mostly scumbling oil painting techniques for painting the flesh tones.
By painting in layers, the artist is able to achieve a more realistic painting. This traditional overpainting layer in oils can be slowly build up in many painting sessions to create beautiful skin tones.
It is also easier to control your values, contrast and colour temperatures with a more limited palette per painting session.

Learn how to make your own DIY mediums for painting. Refined linseed is an Old Master painting medium. In this video, I wash linseed oil with the salt and sand method which is one of the old master painting secrets. This produces an excellent paint medium which commercially refined linseed oil is unable to beat. And it makes an excellent oil for grinding your own pigments. Check out my blog to learn why:

If you need a lot more information on painting flowers, go to https://www.damianosborne.com/how-to-paint-flowers-in-oils to read my comprehensive blog about the steps I took for painting a floral still life.
This blog I wrote has more in-depth information not included in the video.
How do you paint flowers in oils step by step?
In this alla prima flower painting video, I had a beautiful and exotic Amaryllis flower which I wanted to paint. It's best to paint from life when painting a floral still life in oils. The video goes into a bit of colour mixing, toning the canvas panel, and tricks when painting alla prima, or wet in wet.
I hope you enjoyed this brief flower painting tutorial. If there is anything I left out and you would like to know, please don’t hesitate to ask in the comments below.
Happy painting!

Drawing sneakers is a fun way to practice pen sketching. With this sneakers pen drawing, I kept the hatching quite minimal with a thin nib, and used a thicker nib pen to accentuate the shadows and solidify some of the lines. These Converse sneakers were actually my wedding shoes.
