The latest in a series of Earth observation satellites is called, “Landsat Nine.” The United Launch Alliance will send NASA’s Landsat Nine into orbit from a base in California.
The Landsat program began in 1972. For half a century it has provided valuable observations regarding Earth’s atmosphere and landscapes. The newest Landsat will orbit the planet 15 times every 24 hours while collecting over 700 images each day.
The program plays a critical role in understanding and managing Earth’s resources. It also helps track damage from natural disasters and the effects of climate change. The imagery and information provided by the Landsat program generates over 3 billion dollars in economic benefits for global economies each year.
Data collected from the Earth observation satellite is freely available to the public. It allows us to create better maps, contain wildfires, increase crop production, and identify famine risks.
