The Profit Motive: The Scourge of Western Civilization

I'm making public this audio recording of a technical support call (Comcast/XFinity | attempts at getting XFinity app to function | 2021 2 18) to illustrate a point I'm making, increasingly, these days: The profit motive is the scourge of Western civilization ( in both the East and the West ). It leads to placing profit over quality of service and quality of products -- causing waste of time and resources -- and a degradation of the experience of getting anything done.

In my opinion, profit is rightly the consequence of good service and products, and maximizing profit is NOT rightly the primary concern of businesses.

Maximizing profit over quality should be grounds for public disrepute of companies -- with consequences.

I am aware of legal rulings making corporations liable to their stockholders for loss of profits and smaller dividends.

It is exactly those legal rulings that contribute to the profit motive being the scourge of Western civilization, that ought to be nullified. Maximizing profit at the expense of quality of products and services, at the expense of the public good, should be brought to be in widespread public disfavor, to be under widespread criticism, to trigger consequences that make that kind of behavior unpalatable to corporate functionaries.

No doubt, you have encountered faulty software, time-wasting phone call routing menus, technical support team members with poor attention spans or poor language skills, and standards of practice that waste your time and avoidably add frustration to your day. Even the most common computer conventions, such as clicking on a word in a sentence (e.g., to correct a typo) and having the entire word highlighted for deletion, having to be clicked two or three times just to edit a single letter -- even the way computers operate shows a lack of care or intelligence. Likewise, jerky or badly timed operations, such as too-fast or jerky scrolling through a webpage, disrupt smooth attention patterns needed for a satisfying pace of work. Likewise, crappy microphones on "smart phones" and smart phones that exhibit unpredictable behaviors when handled in the ordinary way.

These are examples of how the profit motive is the scourge of Western civilization.

I would like it if others took up this cause and demanded better -- on pain of lost business, lost reputation, and lost profits.

It's time we "put our foot down".
