Old two circuit fusebox. Wooden case with a glass lid.
This contains four ceramic fuses but only two circuits - each circuit has a fuse for both line and neutral. This was common at the time, but is no longer accepted, double pole fusing has not been permitted in the UK since 1955.
All of the fuses contain what looks like 5 amp fuse wire, and would most likely have been used for lighting circuits.

The top display has significant screen burn, and when obtained about 6 years ago was not working at all due to the flyback being cracked in half and several other components failed. Some of the internal wiring had been pulled out a couple of the wiring connectors were missing.
The entire thing was also coated with a vile mixture of nicotine and black greasy dirt, inside and out.

Crabtree wooden fusebox with two rows of five ceramic fuses.
Painted in a dark brown, this has 'War Finish' stamped inside. The brown paint would have been used rather than the more usual varnish, as the paint would have been cheaper and quicker to apply, reducing cost and the time to manufacture it.
The ceramic fuses have sprung contacts, with the fuse wire almost totally enclosed within the ceramic.
Double pole fusing was not permitted after 1955, as a fault could cause only the neutral fuse to blow, leaving equipment non-working but still in a dangerous condition.
