This month I do some mental artithmetic about the density of the interstellar medium, ponder what it means for humanity to live in space, how to communicate to non scientists and other things.
Combining the Space X Falcon 9 landing with a Christmas themed challenge. Try to land a rocket in a parking spot, without damaging the cars around it and ruining someone's Christmas shopping.

The launch was cancelled and delayed until at least the 2nd as a non function valve made it impossible to chill the engines for launch.

While Disney is talking up the new Star Wars merchandise for 'Force Friday' let's rewind to 1994 and look at what is arguably the best Star Wars game - TIE Fighter. A game for the PC which didn't shy away from escort missions which are often derided in modern games. It still stands up well today, and honestly the games deserve a proper remake.

It's been months since DSCOVR stopped sending out regular images of the Earth, from the L1 point between the Earth and the Sun. At this point the prospects for recovery seem remote so I took the data we have and compiled some cleaned up animations showing views of the Earth from the space. The video shows how the viewpoint changes through the year as the Earth orbits the sun and the spacecraft librates around the Lagrange point.
Code for warping images is here:

Sure there are couple of new flyable ships in there, but everyone is more interested in the new outlaw base Grim Hex and the easiest way to get there is to become a criminal so you respawn in that location....

There's a series of failed rockets in 1990, 91 and 92 which were all linked together by their payloads, boosters and root causes. The Superbird B and BS-2X satellite ended up on the same booster due to bad luck, the booster was flawed due to a mechanic's error, which would have been caught if he hadn't fallen ill. The backup of BS-2X was also destroyed due to engine problems on Atlas-Centaur AC-70, but a rushed investigation meant the root cause was missed leading to a repeat on AC-71.

With new, more efficient, relightable engines we can now get a small probe into orbit around the moon, establishing a bridgehead in our war against the flood of contracts being thrown at us.

Finally, I got to visit the telescope park on top of Mauna Kea! I know you've seen this elsewhere, but have you ever seen it in bad weather?
Getting to the top of Mauna Kea to see the telescopes requires acceptable weather conditions, the rangers will sometimes close the road because of wind, precipitation or fog.
Again, thanks to Callie and William from JCMT for arranging this.
