Over the weekend, we learned that telecommunications giant AT&T provided extensive assistance to the NSA while the agency conducted surveillance on any and all internet traffic passing through the US. We already knew that AT&T, just like many other telecommunications companies, had worked with the agency, but now we’re learning about the extent to which the company may have shown, as one document put it, the “extreme willingness to help” the government. Ameera David weighs in.
Then, Ameera and Erin Ade talk about a recent report in The New York Times about what it’s like to work at Amazon. The article highlights instances of employee abuse which many claim were systemic to the organization. It also prompted a public response from founder Jeff Bezos.
Afterwards, Bianca Facchinei takes a look at why a non-profit filed a notice of intent to file a lawsuit against Soylent, the venture-backed meal replacement company. The group claims that Soylent failed to notify customers about dangerous levels of lead and cadmium.
After the break, Ameera is joined by Marshall Auerback – research associate at the Levy Economics Institute and fellow at Economists for Peace and Security. Marshall gives us his take on China’s currency devaluation and tells us if it will boost economic growth.
And in The Big Deal, Ameera and Edward Harrison discuss tech startup funding. While the boom may continue for category leaders that have reached scale, some are fearful a bust is just around the corner.

Markets have had a tumultuous day as hopes of a quick recovery fade and the US Labor Department reports nearly three million new jobless claims. These steep declines also come as the US Federal Reserve warns of a prolonged recession. Meanwhile, as digital currency is seeing a ray of hope during the COVID-19 pandemic, Telegram has halted its cryptocurrency project. It is officially abandoning its Telegram Open Network (TON) and "Gram" cryptocurrency after a lengthy legal battle with the United States. Plus, sector after sector has faced the wrath of the COVID-19 outbreak, and the media is no exception. While television ratings are up due to people staying home, revenue for advertisers is spiraling downward. And with movie studios paralyzed due to the pandemic, the film industry has been able to bank on syndication rights rather than box office draw.
