My take on the classic Kershaw Scallion, a small, spring-assisted EDC knife that shares a pedigree with some of Kershaw's most popular knives ever. For the price, you can't do much better if this knife fits in your preferred size range.

With most things I do, I recognize that my way isn't the only way. That attitude definitely applies to how I pack for a day hike. In this "pack dump" video, I show all of the gear I took with me for a day hike in which I traveled about 7 miles round-trip, and climbed about 3200'. While atop this mountain I was completely on my own, and so needed to be prepared to handle any emergency myself. I brought all the gear I thought I would and could need to spend the night if I absolutely had to.
This load-out was specific to this area and day. I adjust what I bring depending on where I'll be, and how many people I expect to see. On heavily traveled trails, where other hikers and even rescue volunteers are seen often, I'll carry much less. On trails like this, and on days like this, I'm more likely to be on my own, so I prepare accordingly.

Great Mora knives here: https://amzn.to/2J4qgoy
Mora of Sweden created a near-perfect bushcraft/utility, fixed-blade knife with the Mora Clipper 840 in carbon steel - especially when price is taken in to consideration. At around $15, this lightweight, comfortable in hand, scandinavian ground knife gets light detail work done better than most, and moderate to hard wood splitting done as well as many more expensive blades. Dedicated to an emergency kit, or rolled in to your regular camping/backpacking load-out, a knife like the Mora Clipper is a lot of slice for the price and will keep you very well equipped.
