Interview With Auto Body Shop Owner, Patrick Sampoll - Where Are They Now
http://EliteAutoBodyKS.com - This is a video podcast with Patrick Sampoll, Elite Auto Body. Patrick attended and completed the automotive and collision repair programs at Butler Community College. Now he owns and operates his own business. Patrick tells us a little about his business, the challenges he faces, and a bit of advice for students that are currently training or considering the collision repair industry as a career pathway.
This is a common question I have been asked many times. Whether you're a "die hard must be to the metal fanatic" or you're quick to "apply bondo over anything kind of a guy", you may want to read this or watch the video before your next body filler job.
I was taught that body filler must be applied to bare metal. Therefore, all coatings must be ground or sanded to bare metal before applying body filler. However, I learned auto body repair during the lacquer/enamel days. Since then urethanes started being used on cars and some technicians started applying body filler over roughed up paint. However, if applied over a sanded paint surface, it must be an OEM substrate. This means a factory paint job that has never been repainted. Now we have waterborne paint to mix into the equation.
The problem with this practice is the "technician see technician do". Someone notices that body filler is being applied over sanded paint, then they assume this is a standard practice and they start doing the same thing. Before you know it everyone is doing this the same way, but many of them do not have all of the facts. The fact the that paint surface must be an "OEM finish" is the missing link, which leads to filler being applied over all painted finishes.
Watch the video for the full details and let us know what you think. Do you apply body filler over paint?

One problem an auto paint shop faces when performing a car paint job is masking windshield molding. The molding fits tight against or even touches the painted surface, which causes clear coat to fill in the gap or crack between the molding and paint surface.
When the paint coatings are dried and the masking tape is removed, the clearcoat will have a rough edge.
There are several ways to avoid this in the paint shop. If the glass molding is soft and flexible enough a small diameter rope can be used by fitting underneath the molding.
3M makes a tape that can be used that lifts the molding as well.
In the video I will discuss these techniques so you can produce a well masked and clean car paint job

http://CollisionBlast.com - - In this video of auto painting techniques, I was asked how to get a car ready for art work. I assume that the person is an artist and already knows how to use an airbrush. She was just not sure how to prep the paint that is already on the car. That is an excellent question, as just air brushing straight over the clearcoat would peel off shortly after applied to the panel.
Here are the steps to part one. Preparing the paint before starting the airbrush work.
Wash surface with dish soap and water -
Wipe the surface with wax and grease remover -
Wet sand the painted surface with 1000 grit sandpaper
Scuff the panel concentrating on the hard-to-get areas and edges. Gray
Allow To Air Dry And Move Panel To Painting Area To Begin Air Brush or Art Work.
We will pick up from here on Part 2, which is coming soon.

This is basically just a two tone paint job with a stripe in the middle. However, the same methods can be used when painting bigger stripes, such as racing stripes. The car has already been prepped, masked, and primer sealer applied. Next we sprayed the color of the stripe. Once that is sprayed we can start masking where the strike will be. 3M makes fine line tape like this blue tape that works great for striping. Go around the car one panel at a time applying the blue tape. It is very important to attach the tape to one end of a panel and pull it down the entire panel at one time. Do not try to tape little sections at a time. This will always result in wavy and even lines. Once you have masked one panel, move to the next panel and stripe it. On this car the stripe is a quarter inch stripe around the entire car dividing the two colors; however, the back is slightly wider and it gradually narrows down to the quarter inch tape. Next we are going to spray the bottom color which is a high hiding color and it will cover the purple without a problem. Once the bottom color is sprayed and dried we will mask from the striped down. First up like 3/4 inch masking tape to outline the fine line tape to provide a wider stripped for masking then use 36 inch paper mask from the stripe down. On the top we're using a silver, which is translucent and does not cover well. Therefore, we are going to spray a high pigment color to cover the purple. This will eliminate trying to cover the purple with many coats of the silver to hide the purple. You do not want to see the purple showing through to your topcoat. Once you have sprayed your high hiding color to match the sealer, then apply your silver. Now you will have no issue with hiding the purple.
Unmask everything on the car and clear coat the entire car. That is all it takes to do multicolor two-tone with a stripe in the middle paint job.
There were some awesome cars at Kustom Kepms of America Lead Sled Car Show this year. Car from across the country showed up to Salina, KS for the event.
