In today's headline story, Erin Ade reports on the deflation of expectations surrounding the Sochi Winter Olympics coverage by NBC. It seems NBC thinks its viewers are so locked in - even in the Internet age - that NBC can re-broadcast the opening ceremony 10 hours late, with commercial breaks.. and not have a backlash. But there has been one.
Then, 2013 was a stellar year for US equities with near 30% gains. Economic growth in the second half of the year was well ahead of expectations. Underneath this rosy picture is an economy lacking in wage growth and job creation. Financial markets pundit Kyle Harrington talks to Erin about the US economy as well as wage deflation and the advent of wage arbitrage and robots in our global marketplace.
Later, monetary and banking economist George Selgin discusses price and debt deflation. In 2002, Ben Bernanke was worried about deflation. At that time, he gave his most famous speech to date on how to prevent Japanese-style deflation from hitting the US. Bernanke's views helped convince the Fed to keep the Fed Funds Rate at a record low 1% before an overheated housing market forced them higher. Fast forward to today, and we have a new Fed chair, Janet Yellen, facing even similar challenges. Is our understanding of how deflation works accurate?
Wrapping up our deflation theme, in today's "Big Deal", Erin and Boom Bust producer Edward Harrison discuss recent events surrounding Bitcoin - from a clampdown in Russia to a serious payments problem at Mt. Gox , one of the best-known exchanges. These events have seen the cryptocurrency fall precipitously in value.

The future isn’t looking so bright for oil. Brent crude took a huge hit this week, dropping below $50 a barrel to $49.59 – a 5% drop. That’s the lowest it’s been since January, when the price of Brent oil fell to below $46 a barrel, with its price dropping by about 60%. Now on Tuesday it recovered, ticking back above that $50 mark. But analysts say the dip can be attributed to signs that growing production will continue. Ameera David weighs in.
Then, Erin Ade is joined by Cate Long – partner at Puerto Rico Clearinghouse. Cate tells us what happens now in Puerto Rico after officially defaulting on its debt and gives us her take on how they could restructure their debt.
After the break, Bianca Facchinei takes a look at the US government’s strategy to retaliate against the hackers responsible for the Office of Personnel Management hack.
Afterwards, Ameera and Erin talk about what’s behind Twitter’s share plunge. Shares of the social networking company fell to their lowest point since the company went public in November of 2014.
And in The Big Deal, Ameera and RT correspondent Manuel Rapalo discuss the cybersecurity bill taken up by the Senate that would allow companies to share users’ personal information with the government.
Take a look!

The oil market was hit with another sharp swing this week, sending US prices to their biggest loss in two months. It’s all thought to be the result of a huge weekly buildup in crude supplies… the largest since 2001. That’s all according to a report from the US Energy Information Administration, showing the country’s stockpiles soared to new heights last week at a record 482.4 million barrels. And we're not only talking about a glut in US oil production. Boom Bust guest host Ameera David weighs in.
Then, Erin sits down with Anthony Randazzo – director of economic research at the Reason Foundation. Anthony tells us his thoughts on energy and gives us his take on what economic policies to expect from Senator Rand Paul during his presidential campaign.
After the break, Bianca gives up a news update on other major financial stories of the day, including a look at major Asian stock markets, the worsening California drought, Tiger Woods’ major impact on golf broadcasters, and the University of Kentucky basketball team.
Afterwards, Erin joins Ameera to discuss Tesla’s new car designs, which make it look like they’re trying to compete with other luxury electric car companies.
And in The Big Deal, Ameera and Edward discuss the glut in oil production.
