Mark Jorgensen - Desert Bighorn Sheep, Wilderness Icon
Desert bighorn sheep are found in seven western states in the U.S. and six states in northern Mexico. Today their numbers are higher than they’ve been in decades, with 31,000 desert bighorn in the wild. Their story is one of supreme adaptation, human perseverance and dedication, and a rekindling of the spirit of wild North America. The recent publication of the beautifully illustrated coffee table volume, Desert Bighorn Sheep, Wilderness Icon informs readers of the successes of wildlife management efforts to restore the wild populations of desert bighorn in the U.S. and Mexico. Concerted efforts by wildlife agencies, conservation organizations, hunters, citizen scientists, and land conservancies are resulting in increasing numbers of wild desert bighorn sheep. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7C6gKrUFEdk

A lot of systems and equipment go into a facility like our Observatory to make it successful, and with that comes a lot of data that we previously highlighted on our daily tours. Even though tours are on hold for the moment, we still have a lot to share! So sit back, relax, and enjoy the beautiful time-lapse footage from our all-sky camera and solar telescope.

William “Billy” Haines was one of the silver screen’s leading men in the 1930s. He quit showbiz and reinvented himself as an interior designer, becoming one of the most sought-after decorators in Hollywood. In the 1960s, Walter and Leonore Annenberg brought Haines to Rancho Mirage to oversee the creation of their new winter home, Sunnylands. Haines found the couple an architect, the award-winning A. Quincy Jones, and created more than 450 pieces of furniture for the estate. Now, an exhibition of Haines’ remarkable furnishings is on view at Sunnylands Center & Gardens. The designer’s life and legacy are explored in this presentation by exhibition curators and Sunnylands staff members, Anne Rowe, Director of Heritage, and Frank Lopez, Archivist and Librarian; and interior designer Patrick Dragonette.
