I was camping at Algonquin last week. I was at Burnt Island Lake and had just rescued my camera from a rain storm after I had set it up for some timelapse photography. While I was drying it off and cleaning off the front element, the sky opened up and sunbeams started breaking through the clouds. I knew I had to capture that in a timelapse.
Captured on my Nikon Z6 with the 24-200mm /4-6.3 lens. This was my first time ever camping with only one lens, and with a range from 24-200mm, I never felt limited in my reach. It held up well.
"With EVFs, what you see is exactly what you get"
Not always! visual effects caused by longer exposure times at small apertures, like sun stars, won't show up in the EVF.

I sat down with long-time artistic collaborator Brad Blucher to review some weird images and noises I made back in November of 2018.
We review my sound piece 'Lotus'.
I forgot to mention that the visuals are a composite of the same video track layered over itself 3 times, each copy zoomed out slightly, with a feathered edge. This strengthened the 'tunnel of light' effect. The straight out of the camera footage was far more flat.

Do you find yourself saying, "Well, that took longer than expected. Fortunately, now that I know what I'm doing, the next one will be way faster!" Only to find the next one takes even longer?
I do as well. It's because we get pickier; we get better.
Also, why don't I do more art making videos? Well...watch this and find out!
The sketch for my first painting of 2018!

The previous videos have been focused on developing the skills needed to look at and think about the world photographically.
This lesson is about learning from the past. Study the cannons of art history, and try to reverse engineer what they did that made their photos so iconic, so endearing, and so timeless.

More fun with polarizers!
You can learn far more than twice as much about polarization when you have two sets of polarized glasses.

It is a lot of fun watching the lengths a hog will go to to lick it's own back.
Hedgehogs are such strange little creatures.

While I was exploring the various tools nd accessories that make infrared photography possible, I found a variable density IR filter for a reasonably low price on an e-commerce site.
Is it a good buy? Is it worth using?
The thickness of the filter itself causes it to vignette strongly. On my 14-30mm/4, I can't zoom out any wider than 18mm or the filter is visible on the edges of the frame.
The cross pattern or unevenness you get in skies with polarizer or variable neutral density filter is even stronger with this one.
Build quality is poor with the glass easily sliding around inside the metal frame.
While testing it, oil began to leak out of the filter onto my fingers. What if that oil had gotten onto my lens' front element? That's not a risk I want to take.
