Hogger, a World of Warcraft goofy legend, smashes into Heroes of the Storm 2
The next Heroes of the Storm hero is Hogger, the low-level boss who made his name in the forests of World of Warcraft. Hogger dates all the way back to Classic World of Warcraft, where he was one of the first tough enemies players fought in the world. He ended up slaughtering groups of low-level players, which made him a beloved meme in the community. He even returned in Cataclysm as one of the fearsome bosses in the Stormwind Stockade
Hogger is meant to be in the thick of a fight, doing lots of damage in an area. He can create his own terrain to set up advantages, which makes him a chaotic brawler. However, teams with sustained healing and knockback abilities can force him off an objective and prevent him from whittling their front line down.
It used to be that once a series was dead it stayed that way, but that’s no longer true. If a game is fondly remembered by its fans and creators then there’s a chance it might come back in some form, whether it be by Kickstarter like Shenmue, or just a long development time like Star Control: Ghosts of the Precursors. Even so it’s easy to forget the games buried in the past, just because there’s so many of them, and I’ll admit that Puzzle Quest hadn’t crossed my mind in a very long time. Puzzle Quest was an RPG mixed with a match-3 tile game, which was not only fairly revolutionary at the time it came out in 2007 but also a huge amount of fun. Puzzle Quest got a sequel in 2010 and then fell silent, and while the original is still available on Steam Puzzle Quest 2 is long gone unless you can find a physical copy on the Nintendo DS.
While it’s unfortunate that the earlier games in the series are so hard to find, Puzzle Quest 3 was announced today like it hadn’t been over a decade since the last one. There’s not a lot of info about the new game, but two pieces of information pop out- It’s being developed by the studio behind the original, and will be free-to-play. So… yeah, bit of a mixed bag there. On the one hand, Puzzle Quest was fantastic and the thought of playing a new one after all this time is honestly exciting, but the prospect of “Buy gems to play more rounds today!” lessens that excitement considerably. What kind of microtransactions will be needed to support the game are completely unknown at this point, though, as it just about anything else. While there’s a lot more to learn before it comes out, for now there’s an announcement trailer with no gameplay to hint at what new systems might be hiding in Puzzle Quest 3’s depths when it comes to mobile and PC later this year.
In 2010, Ubisoft released Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game, based on the acclaimed graphic novel series and released as a tie-in for its film adaptation. With its classic old-school beat-’em-up gameplay, astounding Paul Robertson artwork, a killer Soundtrack by Anamanaguchi, and more, it was indeed beloved by many players. Unfortunately, in 2014, the game was delisted (likely due to licensing agreements expiring), and without any physical copies, no one has been able to get it again since then. Several parties such as series creator Bryan Lee O’Malley expressed interest in bringing it back, though, and recently, which the tenth anniversary of the movie and game this year, rumors began that Scott Pilgrim would finally return. And sure enough, during today’s Ubisoft Forward presentation, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition was announced, and there was much rejoicing.
If you somehow haven’t checked out the game yet, the trailer below should help get you up to speed. It’s basically a more action-oriented and abridged (possibly even alternate) version of the graphic novels, where you play as one of four characters – Scott, Ramona, Kim, and Stephen – and battle the League of Seven Evil Exes, either on your own or with up to three friends in local or online co-op play. There are also subspace mini-games to compete in, new and unique skills to learn and develop by gaining experience, and the Complete Edition adds the Knives Chau and Wallace Wells downloadable content, providing even more characters to play as. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition is currently set for a Holiday 2020 release on all major platforms, plus Stadia and UPLAY+.
