"To understand psychoanalysis, you have to understand the uncanny. But to understand psychedelics, you have to understand the weird. The weird is more than the uncanny’s low-brow country cousin. Nor is it simply a domain or style of cultural production. The weird is a mode and category of being. We may enjoy weird tales, but the world is telling us one all the time–and we can respond in kind. There are many reasons to heed Alan Watts’ advice to 'follow your own weird.' In this talk we will try to add some ontological heft to this peculiar but persistent term, which is widely used in a casual way but rarely analysed, historicised, and granted its own singular if sometimes disturbing substance. Tracing the etymology and use of the world through literature, pop culture, anthropology, and physics, we will end that the weird forms a Möbius strip between the spookiness of fate and necessity, and the eccentric, aberrant twist of deviance. Weirdness is the cause and costume of anomaly. It thus provides a naturalistic—if sometimes esoteric—way of understanding and talking about 'supernatural' phenomena, as well as the fringes of our own experience." - Erik Davis

Lecture 1 - Rights Under Two Revolutions: 00:00
Lecture 2 - Lord Acton on Revolution: 00:43:47
In Rights Under Two Revolutions, Kirk compares the French Revolution and the American struggle for rights under English law that led to the formation of the United States.
In Lord Acton on Revolution, Kirk gives a series of reflections on Lord Acton’s enduring contributions to our understanding of freedom, expressing great appreciation for Acton’s view that “liberty is the condition of duty, the guardian of conscience,” and that, “It grows as conscience grows. The domains of both grow together.”
In his early writings, Acton would refer to revolutions as “a malady, a frenzy, an interruption of the nation’s growth, sometimes fatal to its existence, often to its independence,” agreeing with Edmund Burke that the French Revolution was “the enemy of liberty.”

Psilocybin mushrooms have been used for millennia, and likely for millions of years. That psilocybin enhances neurotransmission has attracted the interest of pharmacologists, evolutionary biologists, ethnomycologists, artists, writers and more recently addiction and trauma specialists, and computer language coders. The interest in the benefits of psilocybin mushroom use, particularly, for microdosing, ushers in a new era for potential societal benefits across many scientific disciplines. Paul will examine the Stoned Ape Theory, recap some significant historical milestones, and describe some of the more significant psilocybin active species, discussing the future beneficial impacts of psilocybin use in our continuing evolution as a species.
Paul Stamets, D.Sc., is the author of 6 books, including Psilocybe Mushrooms and their Allies and Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World. He has discovered and named four new psilocybin mushrooms. He has received numerous awards, most notably as an Invention Ambassador (2014-2015) for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the National Award (2014) from the North American Mycological Association Award (NAMA) and Gordon & Tina Wasson Award (2015) from the Mycological Society of America (MSA). His influence has now flowed into popular sci-fi culture with his appointment as the senior science Starfleet officer, astromycologist Lt. Stamets (acted by Anthony Rapp), in the new Star Trek Discovery series.
