Under the leadership of Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas, the Greek state slowly started to build up its industry. Despite this, nationalistic fervor among the Greek populace started to grow and favor the fascist party, National Union of Greece (EEE). Throughout 1936, fascism grew until a national referendum was issued on November 16, to dissolve the Greek Parliament and determine if the EEE should claim power. The majority of the population ruled in favor of the fascist party and on the following day the National Union of Greece was declared. Greece's military buildup had begun under the leadership of Georgios Kosmidis, the de facto dictator of the Greek State. His goals are to re-establish the Byzantine Empire and reclaim the Eastern Roman territories.
