Video Game Collection Show and Tell Part 2: Portables!!!
Since the first part where I showed off my console and game collection back home did so well I thought I would show you guys my portables and gameboy games that I brought with me to school. Hopefully I don't bore you, but I take a trip down memory lane recounting how I ended up owning as well as memories of each item. Sorry for the soft focus problem for part of the video, my camera must've lost interest but it eventually worked itself out.
Also, recently I've been playing with editing software so I can make my videos a bit more polished than in the past, let me know what you like/dislike!
Special thanks to Eric Skiff for freely providing the song used in this video, "We're the Resistors" off his album Resistor Anthems. His music can be found at http://ericskiff.com/music/
To start off, thanks to JLCPCB for sponsoring this video as well as providing pcbs to get the ball rolling on this project. JLCPCB Prototype for $2 (Any Color): https://jlcpcb.com
After fixing my two Sony Discman players the next natural progression was making rechargeable batteries for them since oem ones are difficult to find, expensive, and barely work given that they are nearly 30 years past their prime. Requirements for the design include: usb rechargeable, higher capacity than the originals, easily/cheaply 3D printed, and drop in replacement. So let's get to work seeing what I came up with and the design iteration process.
Grab the 3D printed shell and contact pcb board files here: https://hackaday.io/project/165088-sony-discman-diy-lipo-battery/files

So ICStation generously offered to send me more stuff to review so this time I opted for a kit as well as a few other modules they sent me. I settled on a FFT audio VU meter kit (http://www.icstation.com/12x11-audio-indicator-blue-voice-frequency-voice-p-4966.html) that looked interesting so in this video we look at the features as well as parts that come with the kit. The package just arrived today so lets get to it!
ICStation also gave me a 15% coupon to share with everyone for use on your next order for the first 300 customers, enjoy!

I managed to nab a handful of these neat little vintage incandescent projection displays off ebay so let's take a look at them, do a teardown to see how they work, and start thinking what projects we could do with them!

First off I'd like to thank Munbyn for providing this thermal label printer for review. In this video we take a look at a beefy thermal label printer that is generally targeted for commercial applications, capable of continuously and reliably printing. Luckily though with the included usb drivers we can have some fun printing out whatever we want because windows detects it as a standard printer and no other special software is required. I demo printing out a shipping label that I created in inkscape and then we crack the printer open to see what makes it work.

To start off, thanks to the video sponsor: JLCPCB for sponsoring this project. JLCPCB Prototype for $2 (Any Color): https://jlcpcb.com/DYE
In this video we take a look at an early prototype I've been working on to make a digital vu meter that has an analog meter style with more realistic mechanical physics. I was inspired by a similar recent project on hackaday, but wanted to add some improvements I thought would make for a more convincing digital analog-lookalike meter. This is basically only a tech demo and there's a long way to go till we reach a finished project so let me know of any ideas you guys have in the comments below.
Check out the project logs for more technical info including theory and code: https://hackaday.io/project/181004-digital-vu-meter-with-analog-physics

My newest project is to build a portable SNES (hopefully the worlds smallest which uses cmos logic rather than software emulation). This came about after finding a partially broken retro duo at a used game shop with a working snes side for only $4. I keep updating videos as I make progress. This time I further shrunk the board but still need to shave off a millimeter or two.

Dankpods introduced me to KZ, a manufacturer of in ear monitor earbuds, in one of his videos so about a year ago I bought their lowest end ~$20 model and was pleasantly surprised how good they were for the price. Fast forward to about a month ago I was shocked to see one of their representatives reached out to me to see if I was interested in reviewing one of their midrange models! Of course I was!
In this video we take a look at their new ZAR model. Still blows my mind that they managed to cram 8 drivers (a few different types to handle different frequencies) into such a small earbud that comfortably fits in my ear. Let's see though if they are worth the ~$130 (though currently on sale for ~$80) asking price and what they offer in terms of performance.

My most recent attempt to establish 3 wire serial communication with the ds1302 have finally yielded fruit. I have successfully written software to initialize the chip, as well as set and retrieve the current time. Now I need to make a pretty GUI and integrate usb charging of a li-ion cell as well as work on adding motion sensing. More to come. Visit my site: www.diytronics.blogspot.com
