Solo Cape York Adventure - Lakefield National Park Rinyirru - 3/7
Lakefield (Rinyirru) is a 4-5 hour drive from Cairns and Queensland's second largest National Park. Red Lotus lilies abound at Red Lilly Lagoon, a birdwatcher's haven. The Nifold plain is eerily silent as the Magnetic termite mounds gaze out over this vast grassland.
This is part 3 of 7 of my Cape York Adventure, which I completed in June 2008 after 3 weeks travelling Cape York alone in my 200tdi Land Rover Defender 110 Station Wagon.
Most of this footage was filmed in October 2006, with additional material from my June 2008 trip.

Now any driver of an early defender will know, that the dash lighting isn't quite up to scratch. The dim green lighting of the instruments causes eye strain at the best of times, so I'm upgrading my dash lighting with LED's (Light Emitting Diode) and putting those dim nights behind me.
The LED's used were five white T10 6-chip SMD style LED's with a 180 degree super wide angle.

I've decided to convert my Land Rover Defender 110 wagon into an expedition camper, in preparation for an around Australia 4x4 trip in the coming years. The following series will document my progress as I transform my standard interior into something more practical for expedition use.
In Part 2, I begin repairing and treating all the rust in the doors and frame work. I then install Dynamat Xtreme sound proofing in the interior to reduce road noise and panel vibration along with closed cell foam in the roof to reduce heat. Under body sound deadening and a chassis recoat completes part 2.

To reduce vehicle weight I convert from an AGM to a Lithium LiFePo4 deep cycle battery in my Land Rover Defender. Lithium ion batteries have several characteristics which make them a great choice for touring vehicles, primarily their lightweight construction.
I pair the lithium battery with an Enerdrive DC to DC Charger with inbuilt MPPT solar regulator.

This is my cooking and food storage setup I used during a 10 month trip around Australia in my Land Rover Defender. It consisted of an Engel 35L fridge, 3 Wolfpack storage boxes, a plastic tub and 2 Butane gas cookers. The set up was simple and quick to prepare. For 1 man it was sufficient to cook all meals.

During a shakedown trip into outback Queensland, my ignition switch fails. I attempt to repair the switch in the bush and do a reroute to get my car going again.

Mount Kaputar National Park is home to Pink Slugs and Sawn Rocks. Located 570 km northwest of Sydney it is a magical paradise to escape to, up to 10 degrees Celsius cooler than the surrounding lowlands. Plenty of great bushwalks for day trips and stunning vistas to sit back and enjoy. In this video I explore the Doug sky lookout, Dawsons Spring, Eckfords lookout and Sawn Rocks.

A visit to Expedition National Park where I explore the Robinson Gorge section, camping at the Starkvale camping area. Four bush walks are completed being the Robinson Gorge lookout and gorge walking track, a visit to the Cattle Dip and hiking to the summit of Shepherds Peak.
First stop though is Lake Murphy Conservation Park. After Robinson Gorge I visit central Queensland's largest lake in Nuga Nuga National Park, a wildlife hotspot.
After departing I continue on to Lonesome section, visiting Lonesome lookout and the campground. Beilba section was missed due to rain.

Early Defender's were produced without a relay for the headlights. This resulted in high currents passing directly through the headlight switch. Over time, the heat generated from these high currents melted the contacts within the switch and caused it to fail, resulting in the loss of headlights. The voltage drop from the under-rated wiring can be more than 1V! This reduces light output significantly.
After my switch failed I decided it was time to add a relay into the wiring system. This is an easy installation which does not require any modifications to the existing headlight loom. A H4 male connector plugs into the existing headlight plug and powers the relays.
Google "Headlight relay" to find a suitable wiring diagram to follow. Making the relay loom is a simple procedure that anyone with a basic degree of electrical knowledge can achieve. Ready-made kits are also available. Search google and you should find one.
