At long last, Kendrick Lamar is back. The era-defining Compton rapper returns today with Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, his fifth studio album and first since 2017’s Pulitzer Prize-winning DAMN. The double LP marks Kendrick’s final project for TDE, the label he signed with as a teenager in 2003.
Mr. Morale arrives four days after Kendrick’s headline-grabbing “The Heart Part 5” single, which doesn’t appear on the album. Across the collection’s 18 tracks—which are divided into two discs—Kendrick welcomes a wide range of guests, including Blxst, Amanda Reifer, Sampha, Taylour Paige, Ghostface Killah, Summer Walker, Kodak Black, and Beth Gibbons of U.K. trip-hop pioneers Portishead. The production roster includes Sounwave, Boi-1DA, Duval Timothy, Pharrell, and OKLAMA, the new alias Kendrick has been using. The elusive MC discussed his creative process for the new album in an August 2021 blog post.
“I spend most of my days with fleeting thoughts,” Lamar wrote. “Writing. Listening. And collecting old Beach cruisers. The morning rides keep me on a hill of silence. I go months without a phone. Love, loss, and grief have disturbed my comfort zone, but the glimmers of God speak through my music and family. While the world around me evolves, I reflect on what matters the most. The life in which my words will land next.”

What makes "God's Country" truly compelling is the urgency and sincerity with which Scott portrays what's at stake. He's not just fighting for his own soul; he's aware of his influence on the youth who follow him. The video is a vivid reminder that his battle is also a war for the souls of the next generation.
The music video for "God's Country" isn't just a visual accompaniment to a song; it's a statement, a plea, a reflection of Scott's internal struggle, and a call to arms. It ends with a dire warning that this is a real war, and that the fight won't cease until God's Country is burnt to ashes. Through this gripping narrative, Scott shares with us his most profound contemplations about faith, influence, and what it means to truly align oneself with a higher purpose.
The video also draws parallels with Kanye West's "Wash Us in the Blood," evoking the same paradoxes and spiritual themes. Scott's integration of haunting choruses and reflective lyrics adds layers of complexity, creating a soundscape that resonates deeply with the visual narrative.

“Lil Uzi Vert: Modern Day Rockstar” is a short documentary style video exploring what it means to be a rockstar, and how artists throughout time have fit and helped evolve this persona. Lil Uzi Vert has repeatedly attributed his artistic inspiration to the established rockstars of history, rock icons like GG Allin and Marilyn Manson. Throughout the piece, I use editing techniques to frame the narratives of these three artists as continuations of a similar theme; the disregard for societal guidelines and push towards new and controversial expressions of art is put on display through interview and performance clips from all three artists.
(I made this video for my Advanced Portfolio Art class at school, and above is my artist statement from that. Hope you guys enjoy the video! I'm a second semester senior now so I'll be putting in a lot more work on my content really soon. Can't wait to show you guys what I have coming up.)

Travis Scott doesn't shy away from the paradoxes of fame. Tracks like "Topia Twins" and "Sirens" depict his relentless pursuit of an elusive utopia, presenting a picture of being lost forever with an ever-growing list of things to do.
Yet, "Utopia" is not without its moments of hope and redemption. "Parasail" offers a powerful message of liberation, suggesting that true freedom comes from embracing one's mistakes and finding guidance in the love of others. The sentiment is echoed in the Yung Lean feature, with Lean's poignant lines highlighting the unseen side of the music industry and its influence on success.
Throughout the album, Scott's raw vocals and masterful sampling create a unique sonic palette. It's a roller coaster ride through the spectacle and paranoia of fame, offering a raw, intimate, and ultimately hopeful exploration of love, freedom, and the search for utopia. This album is a potent reminder that in the midst of the chaos, we might just find our own version of Utopia.
