American 'banking' exceptionalism -- in the BNP Paribas dispute. Paribas is being investigated for laundering money for the Sudanese and Iranians in contravention of US law. Now the US wants the bank to pay $8 to $9 billion for its legal transgressions. Is this just another form of financial warfare? Erin Ade gives her take.
Then, Erin sits down with Cullen Roche to talk about the US economy. Economic growth in the US was poor in the first three months of the year. But, all of the economic signs now reveal a distinct spring and summer thawing. Cullen Roche tells us what these signs mean and how to interpret them for investing and economic forecasting.
Then, we have part two of Erin's conversation with Marshall Auerback of the Institute for New Economic Thinking. Marshall is a former fund manager with significant experience in Asia. He gives a skeptical take on the Fed's market manipulations as well as a view on how to read the slowdown in China. Is the country headed for a hard landing? Perhaps, but debt deflation dynamics are certainly something to watch, Marshall says.
And in today's Big Deal, Erin and Boom Bust producer Edward Harrison talk about Iraq. Is this even an economic story -- or just a political one? What are the global economic implications if it is an economic story? Watch this segment to find out.
