THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF AFRICA Many African countries have had sustained economic growth since the mid-1990s, but have struggled to transform that progress into long-term development goals and plans. Countries, for example, continue to rely heavily on low-productivity agriculture while failing to create strong manufacturing businesses. African nations will have to collaborate with Africa's public and commercial sectors to remove policy and institutional hurdles to long-term growth. I believe that simply growing African economies is insufficient. They must also evolve. In a nutshell, African countries want Growth with DEPTH, which is how some economist summarizes the multifaceted process of economic transformation into a policy agenda. The economy of most of Africa is underdeveloped, except for South Africa and the countries of North Africa, which all have diversified manufacturing systems. Africa as a whole has plenty of natural resources, but agriculture still accounts for a large portion of the economy, and subsistence farming employs more than 60% of the people. Until the turn of the century, this farming system relied on primitive tools and techniques, as well as the customary family or communal organization for work. Production was primarily for domestic consumption due to limited transportation and communications. Long-distance trade was uncommon, and wage labor was nearly unknown. Exchanges were also limited due to the small size and enormous variability of polities at the period. There were significant instances, particularly in western Africa, where communities had engaged in long-distance trade for generations and had a complex exchange and craft facilities, communications, and governmental infrastructure to keep their trade routes open. Stringent regulations on everything from internet businesses to after-school tutoring companies have set off a wave of layoffs. China’s National Bureau of Statistics said Monday that economic output from October through December was only 4 percent higher than during the same period a year earlier. That was a deceleration from the 4.9 percent growth in July through September in the third quarter. During the pandemic, the world’s demand for consumer electronics, furniture, and other home comforts has produced record-setting exports for China, preventing its growth from stalling. Overall last year, China’s economic output was 8.1 percent higher than in 2020, the government said. But much of the growth was in the first half of last year. The picture of China's economy, which has been the major engine of global development in recent years, adds to concerns that the global economic outlook is deteriorating. To make matters worse, the Omicron version of the coronavirus is now spreading in China, causing tighter restrictions across the country and increasing concerns about supply chain disruption. China's authorities face a conundrum as the economy slows. They have implemented measures to combat income disparity and rein in corporations as part of a long-term strategy to safeguard the economy and national security. On the other hand, Officials are leery of provoking short-term economic disruption, especially in this year of unprecedented political significance.
