Does a Silencer Affect Bullet Velocity? 9mm, .22, and .223 suppressed & unsuppressed
Viewer request video: how does a suppressor affect bullet velocity? We test with supersonic (115 grain) and subsonic (147 grain) 9mm, .22 lr from a pistol and a rifle, and .223 out of the IWI Tavor.
I think there's likely a lot of confusion out there due to movies and whatnot, so here is a real-life, legit test of what happens to ammo speed when you add a silencer. You DO want "slow" ammo when shooting suppressed, because the bullet breaking the sound barrier makes a loud sonic boom. You can hear this in the video as all of the extra CRACK when shooting 115 grain vs. 147 grain 9mm and when shooting .22 lr out of the rifle. .22 from the pistol is much, much quieter and the only difference is that it's supersonic from the rifle but subsonic from the pistol. Hear it clearly in this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_yhqnfSjXA ...anyway, the fact that subsonic ammo is used -- sometimes specialty/exotic ammo in order to make it subsonic when the caliber usually isn't -- often suggests, in movies and books, that a silencer slows down the bullet. It doesn't.
Nerd Note: With an air temperature just below freezing the speed of sound when I was shooting was about 1,085 feet per second. If it were 100 degrees out (and it gets that hot during the summer), the speed of sound would have been 1,160 fps and most of the 9mm and .22 would have stayed sub-sonic. Pretty crazy, right? If it were only 10 degrees F outside like it was when I was shooting a couple weeks ago, the speed of sound would have been 1,062 fps. So a round that's 1,100 fps could be supersonic one day and subsonic the next ;-)
