Digital Hamsterballs - Sphero vs Kerbal Space Program
I looked at Sphero last year, it's kinda like a cross between a drone and a Hamsterball, the team at Orbotix sent me another add on so I'm taking a look at the 'Chariot'. More info on sphero: http://snip.ly/k5tE
I thought I'd try and recreate the hamsterball functionality in Kerbal Space Program, after all there has been more than one space related spherical container designed for astronauts.
Researching the Psionic Gate will take some time, giving the team in the comms room time to make new friends on XCOMster, the new hotness in social networking. Then the resistance comes with a job offer.....

Now it's time to actually get to space, and collect science from there, do a bit of a spacewalk and then reenter the atmosphere in a ball of flame.

The most expensive ship I own in Eve Online is a Rhea jump freighter (market value is just unded 6billion isk, which works out to about $250 in PLEX) and I decided to let Skye perform a cyno jump in it, taking it from the security of hi-sec to a remote corner of low security space. Not only are jump freighters very expensive, they also have no offensive or defensive systems, so they're hugely vulnerable, any operation moving cargo by jump freighter needs other pilots scouting to make sure the area is secure.
I kinda messed up at the end because I forgot to web the freighter to get it into warp faster , but in the end it all worked out.

I really love this game, especially optimizing for the cheapest possible cost.

Over the last few years I've acted as a script consultant for the movie 'Stowaway', a few weeks ago I talked about the spacecraft design and other things seen in the trailer. Now the movie is released I want to cover a few more things from the final product and explain how some of my contributions ended up on screen.
As a consultant, I wasn't trying to rewrite the script, I was trying to ensure that the story could be told without too many massive holes in the science supporting it. And this means that whenever I saw ways to save the situation I'd suggest ways to make sure that it wasn't an option.
Here's my previous video covering the trailer:

Mars has an active surface, especially in the cold polar regions where carbon dioxide ice that binds soil together can evaporate in the summer and leave unstable terrain. Earlier this year another landslide from cliffs near the north pole was recorded, it's not the first by any means, but JPL engineer Doug Ellison used the time difference between the 3 colour channels to create a 3 frame animation showing the debris cloud moving over the Martian surface at about 70km/h. This was cool enough that I felt like sharing it along with a few other examples of shifting features on Mars.

After hearing Elon Musk's discussion of putting a car into space many people joked about making the Teslas faster, since the Tesla S is already one of the fastest Stock cars over the 1/4 mile. Turns out dedicated dragsters are even faster than most commercial rockets over the 1/4 mile (402m)
