Basket Stitch Blanket Tutorial
Blanket size 50" X 70" and uses 4 kgs of felted wool roving as yarn (see my video on how to felt merino wool roving quick and easy)
Please LIGHTLY Felt your wool roving (if using roving or wool tops) before you begin this project.
INSTRUCTIONS
CAST ON (Mock Long Tail)
Tie a knot loosely and put your arm through the loop, chain 17 stitches
You'll notice one side will look like a braid (plait) and the other side will have dashes up the center.
Chain one more and pull it up at a 90 degree angle, this is your first stitch for the next row, pull your yarn through each dash, creating a loop for each dash.
PATTERN
Slip the first stitch in every row for the entire blanket
Rows 1-3: Knit 3, Purl 3 (repeat these until end when you have one stitch left and ktbl the last stitch)
Rows 4-6: Purl 3, Knit 3 (repeat these until end when you have one stitch left and ktbl the last stitch)
Last stitch in all rows ktbl (knit through the back loop)
Slipping the first stitch on every row and knitting through the back loop for the last stitch creates a nice smooth edge on your blanket.

We're using the duplicate stitch over an arm knitted blanket. This adds an extra layer for a nice texture almost 3D effect. My pics don't do it justice!
In the second half we've used a floating chain stitch for the ends of the branches to tack it down. Again this gives it a terrific 3D effect.

If your wool roving is already lightly felted from an arm knitting project pull it apart in to fuzzy bits and then start creating your fit.
Wool felts by friction. The bumpy bubble wrap aids with this as does the soap water (but not too soapy).

Arm knitting is really easy and this snazzy heart blanket is absolutely easy! In fact you can go to any basic arm knitted blanket tutorial on youtube by just about anyone to arm knit up the basic blanket that I'll be using as my foundation.
The heart blanket magic happens when you start using a floating chain stitch, and this kind of stitch can be used not just to arm knit up a basic heart blanket but also to make any shape you can dream of! Cute animals, stars, trees, leaves you name you can arm knit it up with ease if you master the floating chain stitch (which by the way is absolutely easy to master).
I can't wait to see what you've arm knitted up! Be sure to share your creations in my "Arm Knitting and Crocheting" facebook group. Everyone would love to see what you've arm knitted up.
I used about 4 kgs (8.8 lbs) of felted wool roving for the basic blanket.
