PAPEL DA FOFOCA EM NOSSA EVOLUÇÃO | THE GOSSIP ROLE ON OUR EVOLUTION | CLAUDIA FEITOSA-SANTANA
Summary of this video: Whenever someone tells you that gossip is a thing of people not evolved, remember that you are here because your ancestors evolved gossiping.
The human being is by definition a social animal and therefore cooperation ends up being an essential component for our wellbeing. It is extremely important to get detailed information about the people who will be living with us and our children.
When we rent a home, buy it on the Internet, or choose a person to take care of our children, we test our reliance on social co-operation developed over thousands of years of evolution. About 70,000 years ago, it was possible to notice a great need to exchange information about who was accompanying us in a harvest because evolutionarily speaking it is much more advantageous to know beforehand who is honest and who is dishonest, to find out who are trustable. Online satisfaction ratings, letters of recommendation, likes and dislikes are all modern expressions of gossip. The theory of gossip is one of the best hypotheses to explain the evolution of language.
More on the subject, in the book Sapiens (2015) written by Yuval Noah Harari, and in the book Grooming Gossip and the Evolution of Laguage (1998) written by Robin Dunbar.
