When Susan was a child she was raised with polar bears! Her father was a zoologist and a biologist specializing in bears and they actually had polar bears at their home. Now, as you know she has Black Bears and Syrian Brown Bears and Kodiak bears . Susan is probably one of only a very small handful of people in the WORLD that has actual in-depth and hands on experience with four different types of bear.
As far as differences in personality is concerned she says: it is based more on each individual bear rather than the whole species. A lot depend on environment and up bringing. The more pleasant their lives are the more pleasant they are. The harsher their lives are the more resourceful they have to be.
Black bear are more omnivorous more laidback with less aggressive hunting stills. Polar bears have a hard existence which require them to be more aggressive. The Brown bears are somewhere in the middle.
Most of the bears that we have were raised by us from very young in a very loving and structured environment. They are all wonderful bears. From their very first day to their very last day they are treated with kindness and respect and their tremendous personalities reflect that.

Did you know that bears love to eat grass? I remember being surprised at that when I first met Susan and Jim and the bears. Once the bears eat down all the grass in the enclosure (by the end of the year), Susan will actually go out and pick grass for them to have. Here is proof - a video of some of the bears enjoying the grass. Enjoy!

I think the funniest part of this video is little Kimmie trying to get in on the play with Randy and Rosie....but then she is all like “ahhh, forget it”...but sweet Rosie does ultimately come round and give her a go! :)

So little Vinny NuNu of course can't just stay in an enclosure until he is better. He has to get some more exercise and fresh air. We have to get him outside - but we also can't let him run or climb right now.
So Susan is getting him used to wearing a harness....for the first steps she just drapes it on him, then she will slowly put it on him and fit him properly in it and then she will start taking him outside for walks.
Currently he is still mostly circling when he walks and we want to get him to walk with us in some straight paths to help rewire his brain. Even when he walks straight, he will make a small circle - and then continue to walk straight again. He is still a very sick little guy but he does continue to improve every day. So getting him out for some exercise and some straight walking will hopefully improve this too.
