In this interview Dr. Simon Mapadimeng (National Arts Council of South Africa) shares how he accidentally came upon the study of sociology as an undergraduate student and how he has come to see it as a powerful means of addressing the political, economic and social challenges facing South Africa. He particularly emphasizes how the development of sociology in South Africa was closely linked to anti-Apartheid struggles. Sharing his recollections of the sociologists who inspired him, he describes his own commitment to nurturing a new generation of Black South African sociologists.
