My notion is that the #9 chord (aka the 'Jimi Hendrix' chord or the 'major-minor chord'--both silly names) is the essence of Blues Harmony in the vertical sense. Considering, say, a G root, it is the Gmaj chord, the Gmin chord and the G7 chord all wrapped up into one tight little bundle. Now perhaps you can begin to see why I say that the Blues "blends" keys rather than merely interacting them. Why? Because, say, Gmaj is from one key, Gmin is from another key and G7 is from yet another key. And the G7#9 chord is a blend of all three chords just mentioned.

Being a guitar and music theory teacher, my producer was intrigued by the Greek Modes and how they're used in popular music. The most Bluesy Greek mode would be the Mixolydian mode: the fifth in a series of seven modes, ergo, Mode 5.
This particular track was an interesting experiment in looping. The entirety of it is purely improvised. But in this case, we used multitracking. The only other songs that utilize multitracking on this CD were Clear Green and Dreamcatcher. Yet the approach to this one was very very different. It was experimental:
I on each of four tracks, my looper was set to fade out the loop I created over time. As the loop faded, I brought in another loop to boost the faded track. There are four tracks here: One represents a quasi bass guitar track, another a rhythm guitar track, another a lead guitar track, and another an effects and quasi percussion track. All were set to fade out, so I had to keep creating new loops on each track as I recorded. This isn't the most popular piece on this record, yet it remains one of my favorites!

Well, I was just sort of testing out my webcam and mic and spontaneously performed this old original piece that hails back to about 1995. (I wish it was still then!) This piece, I sheepishly admit, was written while I was blazing in quite an altered state (MDMA.) It's like nothing I'd ever written before, nor probably will again. I hope you like it!
