We had the Full Moon called the Worm Moon (when all the worms come out because it is Spring) on March 28, 2021. Apparently it is the fourth brightest full moon of 2021!
No wonder it was big enough to pull the container ship out of the mud in the Suez Canal!
I am on the deck and just filmed it. No speaking; just enjoying the full moon, the Worm Moon of 2021.
3/27/2021 Update: We have Rosemary!
This is our old school seed starting station in our Third Floor Castle in the Sky. Usually I have my heating pads under the seed tray providing a shot of heat, and I have my grow lights overhead providing extra light.
But not this year!
All of my gear is in a storage locker somewhere....I have no idea where. To start seeds this year, I am kicking it old style with just light from the south facing window.
I bought seeds and a seed tray at the local big box store, and I had some ProMix potting soil from another big box store.
We added soil, seeds some water to the tray and that’s it!!!
If you want to get a copy of the FREE Seed Starting Guide and Appendix showing seed areas from the Small Scale Life Community, please use the following link:
https://www.smallscalelife.com/garden/free-seed-starting-guide/
This is based on my own experience growing plants from seed for over 12 years. Obviously I get to write a new section based on my experience this year! ?

In this video, I show you the three basic steps to pruning your tomato plants to increase the productivity and health of your plants. We are all about producing food in our small gardens, and we can’t eat leaves on a bushy plant! The three steps for pruning indeterminate tomato plants (vine-type plants, not bush tomatoes) are the following:
1. Remove the Suckers
2. Prune the side stems up to the first fruit. Side Stems are low hanging branches.
3. Remove leaves that grow beyond your clusters of buds. These sap energy from the tomatoes.
As we are rolling into August, we will be making salsa and sauce with our tomatoes and farmer’s market tomatoes. To get recipes and see how we do it (and to learn how to can the sauce and salsa), go to smallscalelife.com!

Happy Friday, all!
I was organizing The Creation Station (my evil lair…I mean office and podcast studio) and found this white board with show notes from early 2023.
It is no secret that 2023 got away from us as we improved the farm, sold the farm, bought the house, moved, and then completed 9 million projects here!
Things got put on the shelf. Literally. I found this White Board with notes from the first episode of the Small Scale Life Podcast in January 2023.
So….I decided it was time to let that go (even though the notes and questions were really good). It’s time to move forward!
I talk about letting go as I clean the board, and I also introduce the Small Scale Life Wellness Club on Facebook. I created this group to help keep those who join accountable and moving forward with 2024 Wellness Goals.
I am excited about this group because I already have some VERY cool and interesting people as members: yoga instructors, sound healers, energy healers, content creators and people from all kinds of spiritual practices.
So…why not sign up?
Use the link to join, and I’ll have the 24 Hour Plan for you. Use the link below:

Even if you have no big wellness goals for 2024, sign up anyway.
You might learn, do, grow and be a little better everyday as you go through the year!

Welcome to my garden! In this video, we take a tour of the garden on 10/1/16. We are running out of time for gardening in Minnesota. Frost typically hits in my area on 10/10/16, and I have a lot of tomatoes, beans, cucumbers and herbs still growing in the garden.
For more about Small Scale Life, please check out my blog at smallscalelife.com!
This video was filmed with a GoPro Hero 4 Silver. I also used a ProMic accessory from PolarPro. It makes all the difference! Here is a link to the kit I am using: https://www.polarprofilters.com/products/gopro-microphone-external-mount

Here is a long-overdue update about the Hybrid Rain Gutter Grow Systems/wicking beds I have installed on my driveway. In a side-by-side comparison, the wicking bed system is performing better than the Hybrid Rain Gutter Grow System. Plants look very healthy in the wicking bed.
I am changing out some of the plants that are not doing well, and hopefully that will solve some of the problems in the Hybrid Rain Gutter Grow System. Jalapenos do not seem to like the wet soil, but the green peppers are flourishing.
It will be time to replace the plants that aren't doing well. Remember: I want productive plants and a solid harvest this year.
I have posted another video with a garden update on the raised beds, so please check that out. Also, I have a How to Build a Vertical Garden post on smallscalelife.com. Check that out as well!

Getting Grounded with Tom: Storms are A-Brewin!
The Norse God Thor was busy in the Twin Cities the past couple days! We had some serious rain, lightening, thunder and hail on Monday and Tuesday this week!
I was going to head off to bed, but I kept seeing the lightening reflect off the mini blinds. I had to go take a look at the light show.
The noise in the background is our air conditioner. Yes...it is early April and we had it running. Heat and muggy weather makes things a bit uncomfortable in the Third Floor Castle in the Sky. Bear with it; the light show is worth it!
There isn’t much insight today; enjoy the light show!
Learn, do, grow and be a little better everyday!

This is my Daily Grounding Practice.
PURPOSE: I am going to carve out time each day to slow down and connect with Nature in some way. At the same time, I can give some thoughts about what is going on in our Small Scale Life.
Why am I doing this?
?To remind myself to be grateful - I am extremely grateful for the people and events unfolding in my life
?To connect with Nature
?To practice discipline in good times and more difficult times
?To be be mindful - Some live outside in these extreme temperatures. Never forget those less fortunate
I am going to TRY to post daily. If I miss a day or two, I am human.
BE ADVISED: Snow and subzero temperatures can hurt you (ie, frostbite). There are MANY ways to ground and get a dose of Nature. The key: get outside. Be careful. Be safe.

Hey, all! We are on Day 30 of our April 2024 Whole30 Challenge! We have arrived!
Congratulations on making it to Day 30. That is an amazing accomplishment, and I am very proud of you. Well done! Good job.
You have essentially been detoxing for 30 days, and you can now begin the next important phase of this Whole30 Challenge: the Reintroduction Phase.
IT STARTS WITH A PLAN….
Take some time tomorrow and come up with a plan for Reintroduction. Remember, you will be keep eating clean on the Whole30 plan and add those things you cut out one by one.
When you add those things back into your meals, pay attention to how you feel. After you reintroduce foods, you might:
?Have an allergic reaction
?Have stomach issues (gas, bloating or frequent bathroom use)
?Get a headache or feel that brain fog
?Feel just fine
Go slow. Don’t introduce it all at one (ie, pizza and beer). You want to see how these things affect you, so introduce one type of food at a time.
Remember: continue eating Whole30 clean during this Reintroduction period and slowly introduce these foods.
KEEP GOING
Remember: keep going. Don’t stop now; you are almost there.
We are moving right along. Stay focused. Keep going! It does get easier and better!
Remember to learn, do, grow and be a little better everyday. And that’s a good thing!
~ Tom

In this video, I return to the Apple River and Eagles Ridge Property for the first time since mid-July 2021. We sold the property in late July, and we have not been back since clearing our gear from the land.
The Apple River has a strong current and a lot of positive energy. I could feel it standing on the banks and thinking about the great memories there.
Eagles Ridge was there for a season (literally), and now we are digging in and putting roots down at Driftless Oaks Farm.
It is good to take a look back and see how far you have come. The key is: don’t get stuck there! We have moved on. We have grown. We are learning by doing, and we are better for it.
The Eagle visited me while I was in Apple River Valley. The symbol, icon and inspiration for the name of that property made me smile. It was as it should be.
Eagle count = 1 for the day, and it is fitting it was flying near Eagles Ridge.
The new owners have built an access, and they are taking care of it. I know it is in great hands, and I hope it brings them a lot of joy.
Now…..armed with a new podcast studio, it is time to create! Stay tuned, friends!
