It was so quiet today at work, I found myself pulling a broken hard drive apart and making a magnet crane out of the bits! What I used: 1x neodymium magnet (object for the crane to lift) 1x Electromagnet coil (the part of the crane that grabs / releases the neo magnet) 2x wire (to connect the electromagnet to a power source) 1x 5 volt, 2 amp supply (to be precise, it was from the +5v and +0v terminal of your standard molex connector. I suspect that having the electromagnet on for too long will burn/ melt it because the current is a bit too high. Not really gonna test this at work though! If you want to use an electromagnet coil, you will need to file off the insulation at each end, so that wires you connect will allow a circuit to close.
