2017 Solar Eclipse (QSO Party) with TOTALITY by N0SSC
Operating and watching the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse from Anna, IL. It was absolutely incredible, but my ham radio performance was not - I only made 6 contacts...regardless, totality was absolutely breathtaking. SmarterEveryDay's video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lepQo...) pretty much sums up how we felt under the moon's shadow.
Also, sorry for the terrible lack of focus. My 6 year old point-and-shoot is pretty broke, and so is my wallet. Subscribe to N0SSC to help me make enough money to buy a camera that focuses.
Edit: A lot of commenters bought this radio without a license. Be aware if you transmit without a proper license on any frequency, you're liable for fines and prosecution. In the US, it's illegal to use it for FRS, GMRS, MURS since it isn't type accepted. It's legal for Part 90 (licensed land mobile) and Part 97 (ham radio) usage with a Amateur Radio license.
Receiving is for the most part legal. But be careful -- you've been warned!
After bashing on the UV-3R, I hope this glorifying review of the UV-5R will win your hearts back. The UV-5R still costs under $50 (at 409shop.com) and brings all the features to the table. Even a light and FM BC radio, haha.
Biggest pet peeves: The RPSMA antenna connector (like the wouxuns) and the almost too-easy-to-press PTT button, and the radio is only chargeable in the included stand.

Wow an unboxing video!
I do a terrible job putting a Tram 1481 Dualband VHF/UHF High Gain Vertical antenna together, and put it to the test against a Signal Stick HT antenna, and a Tram 1181 mag mount antenna.
Next time I'll put it on my roof.

My inspiration: Ham Nation 35: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6thd7EAa5U
In my 4 years of ham radio I have made many many contacts and it's sad to say some of them had not the greatest transmit audio, some of them so much so that they were one of those "1-9" contacts, where the 1 stands for completely unintellegable, and the 9 stands for their signal strength!
In this video I go over a few things that will improve your audio with stock HF radios, as well as installing microphones and mixers, speech processing and equalization. I get to unbox the PR40, hook it up, and demonstrate what you've just learned at the end.
