It is time to get this garden going! We've got a new tiller, but before I can use it, I'm going to have to cut down some grass. The only problem is... I've never hooked up a PTO implement before!
Our quail are finally starting to lay eggs! This means that I'll be able to start eating a few of them pretty soon... the eggs AND the quail!

I went out this morning before work to feed the chickens and found this little guy caught up in the deer netting surrounding the chicken run. I would like to have spent some more time filming it and getting pictures, but I had to get to work. Oh well. Perhaps our paths will cross again in the garden.

Well, our chickens FINALLY started laying for us! The first egg was perfect. It was a little on the small side, but it had a good shape with a very solid shell. However, the next several eggs lacked a shell. In my inexperience, I wasn't sure if perhaps it just takes time for the chickens' system to develop properly or if it was a dietary problem; so, I began feeding them more and giving them egg shells for calcium. Then, the eggs stopped completely. It was a mystery! For over a week, we didn't see a single egg. I couldn't figure it out!
But, the mystery has been solved. We found a nice, neat little nest in the tall grass by the chicken coop. I really don't want to have to search everywhere for my eggs, so I figured it was high time to get our nesting box put into the coop. And, since I wasn't sure how long the eggs had been there, I decided to transplant them into the nesting box in hopes that one of our hens will go broody and hatch them out.

If you are planning on doing any kind of rotational grazing or mob grazing of your livestock, you're going to need a way to keep your animals confined to a certain area. There are many options out there ranging from permanent paddocks to electrified netting or wires. Given our property and goals, we decided that electric netting would be the best way to go.
In this video, we unbox and install a 164' strand of Starkline electric sheep & goat netting. What's in the box? How easily does it go up? Watch to find out all of this and MORE!

Watch as I learn how to harvest, clean, and dry wood ear mushrooms!
It was a very rainy spring! Perfect for the species of Auricularia mushrooms native to Arkansas. And, after lots of research and comparisons, I am finally confident enough in my identification of them that I am ready to harvest a few to eat.
Please note that I am not a mushroom expert! You should not take anything you see/hear in this video as fact; but rather use it as a guide while doing your own research.

We are 48 hours into our new journey with sheep, and we are still a little bit concerned. There are a few that do not seem to be particularly healthy. Maybe we are just overthinking things because we are inexperienced, but some things just don't seem right. There is one animal who seems legitimately sick and a couple of others that seem to be limping and hobbling around.
I sure hope this doesn't turn into a bad investment!

We still have several sweet potatoes left over from this past spring, and I noticed that they were beginning to sprout. I'm going to try growing some slips out of them that I can plant in my garden.
Also, I give my thoughts on schools shutting down due to concerns over Covid19.
