In 2018 I visited Hawaii's Big Island and saw a huge lava lake on the summit of Kilauea, days after I left the activity got so intense the park was closed. There were earthquakes and then a new set of volcanic fissures opened up under the neighborhood of Leilani Estates. Ultimately Fissure 8 would effuse record amounts of lava in a very short time, creating rivers of lava that reached the sea, covering many homes and also creating new land before the eruption ceased. So when I went back to Hawaii this year I really wanted to get as close as possible to the site of this event. As it turns out, there are tours that take you onto the devastation zone, some are pricey professional operations, others are locals who add their own experiences and you can literally rent a vacation home that's right next to the cooling lava flows.
