The Katherine Gorge is made up of 13 gorges. This video takes you on part of the cruise through gorge 1. The Katherine Gorge tours operate all year round, resulting in a dynamic experience depending on what season you visit. You will never get tired of the changing landscapes, from higher water levels and abundant vegetation in the wet season to exposed rock and clear blue skies in the dry season. Learn about why the entrance to the first gorge is referred to as Nitmiluk and the second gorge is called the Blue Winged Kookaburra.
The second gorge is the second longest, at 2.4 km in length. The Jawoyn people believe the rainbow serpent ‘Bolung’ resides in the deep green pools of the second gorge and Dreamtime says ‘Bolung’ created the gorge. The escarpment walls on both sides exude a strong spirituality which unlikely you will not feel.
The hanging gardens is a section of the gorge with an almost rainforest-like atmosphere. Water seeps through the natural sandstone structure to provide a lush green garden all year round. This area is protected from the harsh sunlight, adding to the cooling effect.
This tour is a great insight into Nitmiluk, where there’s always something new to discover on every tour.
