Music by Hiro Nakanishi - Lofi Good feeling - https://thmatc.co/?l=F45E5AD9 An iconic stretch of Darwin pipeline, painted over the years by countless schoolchildren and even disgraced entertainer Rolf Harris, sits along the Stuart Highway The pipe running down Darwin's main highway through the suburb of Parap was constructed in 1945 to increase water flow to the city. It has been painted in several stages since the 1970s, with the first murals thought to have been painted sometime after Cyclone Tracy in 1974, when the city needed brightening up after the tragic natural disaster. Long-term Darwin resident Ken Conway AM said he remembered a large section of the pipe being painted in 1979 during Darwin's first Bougainvillea Festival. A group from the performance space helped organise a community project to paint the pipe during the festival. The next stage of public artwork was added shortly afterwards in mass painting sessions by schoolchildren. Residents can still remember painting the pipe in 1982. Over the years, the artwork on the pipeline faded due to exposure to sunlight or was covered over by graffiti. Power & Water in 2003 commissioned local artist Ro Koch Laurie to help freshen it up along with help from local students. They were allocated a different theme each, with students asked to create their biggest and brightest drawings around each theme. For example, Ludmilla Primary was asked to create ideas about its nearby creek, while St Mary's Primary created pieces around the wetlands, the wet season, crocodiles, birds and insects. More than 500 students submitted drawings, which Mr Koch Laurie then chose from to trace onto the pipe.
