The Most Sought After Bad Tank | Carro Armato M15/42 Part 2
The Carro Armato M15/42 was the last variant of the Italian ‘M’ tank series. It was in service from late 1942 to 1945 in small numbers. For the most part, it was used by the Wehrmacht. Compared to its predecessors, the M13/40 and M14/41, it had a much more powerful engine and a gun with greater anti-tank performance.

Despite the progressive weakening of the Soviet Union in the 1980’s, the prospect of a nuclear war in Western Europe was perhaps just as likely in that decade as anytime during the Cold War. The significant quantitative advantages that the Warsaw Pact had in tank terms had led to a serious rethinking in NATO as to how to increase the survivability and fightability of their own tanks. That redevelopment had been assisted in no small amount by the British development of a new type of armor called Chobham. This new generation of tanks had left some designs out in the cold and one of those was the Vickers Valiant or Vickers Mk. 4. The Valiant failed to receive orders and was seriously damaged in a transportation accident. Its biggest problem, however, was considered to be the relatively low mobility, as the emphasis of the design had been on acceleration and torque rather than top speed.

The remaining part of 1936 proved to be mostly disastrous for the Republic, yet it managed to hang on.
At the end of October, enthused by the arrival of the new T-26s, Republican High Command ordered an offensive on Toledo to stop the Rebel advance on Madrid. Whilst the offensive failed, the T-26 proved its superiority. The T-26s broke the Rebel defensive line, but were left vulnerable as the infantry was unable to keep up with the tanks. In the narrow streets, 3 T-26s were lost to anti-tank cannons and rudimentary hand explosives similar to Molotov cocktails. On the other hand, at least 2 Italian CV33/35 light tanks were destroyed by the superior Soviet/Republican tanks.

The FCM 36 was one of the light tanks used by the French Army in the battles of May and June 1940. Despite being relatively unknown, it was quite technically advanced compared to other French light tanks and proved its effectiveness during a victorious counter-attack at Voncq in early June 1940. However, the vehicle’s many qualities were overshadowed by the outdated doctrine behind its usage and construction, and its very limited presence on the frontlines.

Viewing the public debut of the Soviet Union’s IS-3 heavy tank at the Berlin Victory Parade of September 1945, the Western powers - including Great Britain - were shocked. As heads of the British, American, and French Armies watched these machines clatter down the Charlottenburger Chaussee, they saw the shape of a new generation of heavy tanks. From the exterior, the IS-3 was a tank with well-sloped and – apparently – heavy armor, a piked nose, wide tracks, and a gun at least 120 mm in caliber. At least in appearance, this was superior to anything being fielded by the other victorious Allied powers at the time.
The respective officials knew that they had nothing in their arsenal capable of potentially combatting this menacing tank that was now in service with an increasingly aggressive USSR. In response, the militaries of these countries began to develop heavy tanks that - they hoped - would be able to combat the IS-3. The United States would develop the M103 heavy tank, while the French experimented with the AMX-50. Britain went in a different doctrinal direction and created a ‘Heavy Gun Tank’. This was a uniquely British designation that was not governed by weight, but the size of the gun. This vehicle was based on the experimental FV200 ‘Universal Tank’ chassis and given the official and somewhat long-winded title of ‘Tank, Heavy No. 1, 120 mm Gun, FV214’. This vehicle would be better known as the ‘Conqueror’.
What followed was the FV215. With its monstrous, 183 mm gun, this vehicle has become something of a legend among enthusiasts of a particular age, largely due to a popular video game. Unfortunately, this has meant a number of falsehoods have been spread about the vehicle. This article will highlight the truth behind this uniquely British vehicle.

??Agricultural tractors are essential machines in farming. In times of war, these machines have become the donor for an equally bewildering array of armored vehicles to meet some urgent need, usually the imminent threat of an invasion when existing stocks of armored vehicles are in short supply. A strong platform, with decent off-road characteristics, cheap, simple, and plentiful, the abundance of agricultural tractors around the world means that there is a ready supply on which to base an expedient armored vehicle. Given just how different these vehicles can be, however, this usually has meant a bespoke solution for each vehicle. There is at least one thing which almost all tractors have fitted since WW2 – the 3-point linkage on the back. If a system of armoring a tractor could be made so that it fitted this type of linkage, then virtually any tractor around the world could be made into an armored vehicle. It is that logic which, in February 1983, led to Frenchman Victor Bouffort designing exactly such a system.

Providing adequate fire support to an infantry unit was, and still is to this day vital in achieving success when engaging enemy positions. This is something that the Germans were quite aware of before the Second World War, based on their experience gained in the First World War. For destroying well-defended targets, they introduced the 15 cm (5.9 in)schwere Infanterie Geschütz (heavy infantry gun) 33 into service, or sIG 33 for short. While this gun did its job very well, it was heavy and hard to field. In order to increase its mobility, the Germans decided to mount this gun on a modified Panzer I chassis. Alkett was tasked with developing such a vehicle, which it did in 1940. A small production run of 38 vehicles would be carried out. Despite its primitive construction and the limited number built, this vehicle, very creatively named 15 cm sIG 33 auf Panzerkampfwagen I ohne Aufbau Ausf.B, would remain in service up to 1943.
