As I get familiar with Wireshark 2.0, I’m finding that there are subtle differences from the previous version. I found the best way to get used to a new version of an application is to install it and go cold turkey. I mean cold turkey in the sense that I don’t want to have the previous version on my hard drive as a security blanket or fallback.
Then I simply go through the motions and replicate all the daily tasks that I use Wireshark for and figure out if the new version has any drastic differences.
In this video I cover what happened with the Statistics-Summary Screen and how it has been combined with the file comments function.

NetAlly AirCheck Screen Capture and Upload Tip
One of my personal criteria for troubleshooting tools is the ease in which you can capture the screen, report and how to retrieve that information.
Trying to take a photo of the screen while avoiding screen glare is not acceptable and I’m getting tired or writing my own scripts as a workaround.
I have to give the folks at NetAlly credit for their products on how easy it easy to capture data and get access to it.
In this video I show you how to perform a simple screen capture (which was built in to Android). I then take it to the next level by showing you how easy it was for me to upload the file to my Link-Live portal. I just realized that I didn’t mention that you could just as easily copy the files using a USB flash drive.
I want to stress how important it is to have a process, workflow or procedure to delete the files from the unit after you are done. This is critical when dealing with capture files.

ICMP REDIRECTS
I always get a kick working with a client onsite. It doesn’t matter if its troubleshooting, installing or conducting a training session.
I love taking traces of what many people categorize as ‘simple’. Things like ping, traceroute are easily taken for granted. When I mean specifically is that when you perform these commands and they work, people assume they were well.
I’m still surprised when I speak to people and they expect these tests to take days and lots of typing one that is not the case. Performing these quick concise tests gives you the ability to figure out what is in the trace file rather than capturing 400 MB, and sorting it out later.
The other advantage of performing these short tests is that you can do them relatively quickly with very little effort and it can easily be applied across different applications. This builds confidence with your tools and skill sets, not to mention gaining a true understanding of how your equipment behaves in your environment.
In this example I explain how an ICMP redirect behaves and what I suggested to my client as possible solutions.
Enjoy,

Many of my clients or I can not share trace files because sensitive public ip addresses, port numbers or data is easliy seen
within the trace. Unfortunately many vendors would benefit from the trace to address a performance or bug within their
product.
In the end I typically resort to blurred screen captures, a lot of writing and more phone conversations to convey what I am
trying to explain. Because of this extra effort, I must admit that as a general rule, I shy away from offering trace files.

ok the title is a mouthful, sorry.
In this video I attempt to illustrate the Signal Strength difference between the AP and client's perspective. Just because you get a good signal strength from your AP doesn't mean the AP automatically hears you as well.

Fixing Window Scaling Analysis Issues Wireshark 2.0
When analyzing packets its important to get it right. I spend a lot of time explaining to people that the TCP handshake is critical to capture since some information you might need is only seen there.
Items that would be an example of this are; TCP MSS, SACK Permitted and TCP Scaling Option values. The TCP window scaling option is used to increase the TCP receive window size past its maximum value of 65,535 bytes.
If you’ve ever analyzed a trace where the TCP Scaling option was used but you did not have the TCP 3 way handshake in that trace, you will see weird TCP Window Size values.
With Wireshark 2.0, you can tell Wireshark what the scaling option or factor is and not the TCP Window sizes will be accurate.
In this video I show you the trace file with a scaling option, then I remove the scaling option to show you what the TCP window size now looks like, finally I show you how to use the Protocol Preferences option to tell Wireshark what scaling option to use.
