What is a monologue? And if you’re learning a monologue, how do you deliver your lines - do you look at the audience or at a different point on stage? How long is a monologue, and what elements should you look for when choosing a monologue for an upcoming audition?
Monologues can be a challenging kind of theater piece to deliver. After all, in a monologue, you’re often the only person ont the stage or the only person speaking, and so it’s up to you to engage the audience and maintain the stage presence necessary to keep viewers hooked. It’s up to you to step into your character and connect with the audience.
And good monologues can be hard to find. Unless you’re delivering a monologue as part of a longer production, it will be up to you or your theater instructor to find a monologue that’s the right fit for your skill set.
That’s what this video lesson is about. Here, TakeLessons partner Adam Roebuck shares a professional’s tips for defining a monologue, preparing a monologue for an audition, and finding and selecting a monologue that will showcase you and your abilities.
Jump-start your theater skills and take a first step towards a rewarding career in the theater by watching this video, selecting your first monologue, and wowing audiences with your ability to disappear into the world of your character.
