Sonic and the Magical Stone, another great fan game made with Open Sonic! This one is fairly unknown, despite being from a decade ago. The Open Sonic engine is known as Open Surge today, but the old engine still holds up okay. So, there are a few zones! (Plus a tutorial zone.) These zones have some catchy themes too, with soundtracks from Sonic Spinball, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, and others that I don't recognize. Also, unlike the original Open Sonic, the level design is a lot more fast paced (and open too, like Sonic CD). Well, there are some features this game lacks (bosses, special stages) but that aside, Sonic and the Magical Stone is a good one. Probably my favorite fan game made with the Open Sonic engine. An obscure and fairly recent fan game! Sonic: Project Fast is an early beta right now, but it's better than I expected. Since this game uses the Not so Simple Sonic Worlds engine, the physics are solid. But how is the game, otherwise? First of all, there's cutscenes. They're basic, but it's nice to have some plot. And the game you starts off infiltrating the Death Egg with the tornado! Usually it'd be a later zone, but I can appreciate the unique beginning here. The level design is a bit odd sometimes, but it provides a lot to explore, which is good. And Silver Sonic tries to take you down! We don't usually see him in the Death Egg. But with rings, I don't think he's hard. Mecha Sonic returns as well, except I think he's even easier than the last boss. But hey, it's still nice to have a couple bosses! Also, Chaos emeralds are in this game... but it appears that they are just collectible in a normal stage (rather than in a special stage). Project Fast does seem like it's early in development, but it's cool. You can give it props for originality - it doesn't just start you off in yet another Green Hill or Green Hill inspired zone. So, I think this one has potential. Another fan game adventure begins in Sonic Trinity! You can play as Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, a good start for characters. I had some fun making my way through Jungle Road Zone, a scenic, open zone with some changes in landscape between acts! Though it's a bit linear, and it could use some kind of gimmick to help it stand out, I thought it was a unique start (compared to the usual Green Hill type zone). As of this video, this fan game isn't cancelled, so maybe we'll see it again! Though it went by kinda fast, this first demo is nice so far. Ever wish you could play Minecraft in a 2D Sonic game? Well then your dream has come true, with Sonic Minecraft World. Of course, this fan game is inspired by the very popular indie game that we've all probably heard of. There isn't exactly Minecraft mechanics... just a level. For me, this isn't much of a downside, because I haven't played Minecraft much. But it'd still be nice to have some more Minecraft-inspired gameplay (and some more levels, too). That being said, I enjoyed playing through this one - there are creepers to defeat, and the ambient music is quite nice! Sonic Minecraft World could be a great fan game, for any fan of both Minecraft and Sonic. But I can tell that it's not all the way polished, and I'd like to see more elements from Minecraft, if possible.
