Dragon 2 & Starliner Astronauts Named & Flights Schedules
Today NASA named the 9 astronauts who will be flying on the first 4 commercial crew missions, 2 NASA astronauts per flight and one Boeing astronaut on the first Starliner flight. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55gqJbmxMpA
The first of my Deep Space Updates for 2023 - The final launches of 2022, where China proved that it can just about keep up with SpaceX if you count the entire nation's rocket fleet and ignore metrics such as 'total mass to orbit'.
There were a few other news stories, but the holiday season has slowed the usual reports of big events and I decided to talk about what we can expect in 2023.... but my camera battery was running out :)

On Crawford Hill in Holmdel, New Jersey there's a collection of old scientific radio antennae which were built decades ago but are now abandoned. One of these is a Hogg Horn Antenna built for project Echo, the first proper demonstration of realtime satellite communication. It needed to be large and exceptionally sensitive because the satellite was a passive reflector rather than an active relay.
This sensitivity later lead to it being used as a scientific instrument to study the skies in radio waves, but the scientists using it, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson struggled to eliminate radio noise which was creeping in. They worked hard to get rid of this until they eventually discovered a scientific explanation for this and ultimately were credited for their work in discovering the cosmic microwave background radiation.
The site is currently abandoned, but the horn antenna is registered as a historic place, hopefully this will result in the preservation of the antenna for future generations.
You can read a lot more about NASA's balloon satellites in this book about NASA's history:

While on vacation in Hawaii I did get to visit a lot of cool places, obviously I really wanted to see telescopes on the top of the mountain, and we will get to that, however a lot of the telescopes are operated from the much more hospitable environment near sea level.
Gemini Observatory is a pair of 8 Meter telescopes, in different hemispheres, able to cover the whole sky between them. I dropped by for a chat with the staff.

Yes the audio is bad, and you're a dum dum if you think I don't know this already and insist on pointing this out.

I've now got 2 Saturn V models and wanted to look at the detailed surface features which all have a real function as part of the design.
The word 'Greeble' isn't correct of course, it's a model building term that refers to all sorts of non-functional detailling added to plain surfaces to make them look more interesting.

SpaceX were caught by surprise when their latest batch of 49 Starlink Satellites launched into low Earth orbit with much higher atmospheric drag then they expected as a result of high solar actitivity. This drag has ultimately resulted in the satellites being unable to gain altitude and reach their deployment orbit.

Someone accidently brought up the concept of Victorian era space travel in my tribute to Gerry Anderson, so I thought I'd show people this old PC RPG - Worlds of Ultima - Martian Dreams.
It features a bunch of famous Victorian era celebrities travelling to Mars by accident, and then you set out with Nikola Tesla & Sigmund Freud to rescue them.
If you want the game you can get it for free (legally!) from gog.com

Also, it's pretty easy to run this on emulators, I have this running on my Nexus and iPhone
