A quick video about the Ariane 5 rocket. The European designed launch vehicle had an unfortunate problem on its first mission, but it's scheduled to launch for the 100th time in a few hours! ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sijTOXxGO7I
The notion of the 'space fighter' is a staple of science fiction, they play key roles in some of the most enduring sci-fi universes, and as it happens frequently the people behind these universes haven't really given much of a though to how the design of a space fighter affects the way it flies and performs.
There are plenty of great space fighter games and within the genre of 'spaceship' games there are different flight models that are used - non-newtonian, semi-newtonian and full newtonian. With Cloud Imperium Games releasing a detailed dev blog on their spacecraft flight mechanics I wanted to demonstrate some of the physics within Kerbal space program. We start out in the atmosphere to demonstrate how real world fighter planes fly since this behaviour is aped in Star Wars. Then we go to the Mun and demonstrate various control systems seen in universes that support newtonian flight models.

For the last 20 years Iridium Flares have been a regular feature of satellite watching as the iridium network provided a nice predictable set of satellites which just happened to produce satellite flares. However the old network is in the process of being replaced and soon you'll not be able to see this phenomena.

People seem to quite like my previous video, even through my complete noobishness, so let's move on to the next mission in the series where the Battlestar Theseus makes a stand against the pursuing Cylon Basestar.

Ever wanted the parachutes on jetissoned stages to deploy moments after staging? Ever wanted an emergency parachute deploy on your return vehicle just in case power goes out? Smart Parts provides light weight modules which can trigger staging events or action groups. In early space vehicles much of the automation and control was at this level, computers, remote control or even pilots didn't come much later.

ULA's AEHF-5 Launch turned out to be a surprisingly spectacular event due to small launch delays leading to a launch into the pre-dawn skies. With the rocket heading towards the sun, and the camera looking back into the rocket exhaust we were able to see he shadow of the booster in flight. Pretty amazing!

I got distracted from long term projects and instead attempted to build something that resembled the Origin 300i from Star Citizen it mostly uses B9 parts and it can't VTOL. Also, there's no part that includes fuel so it needs infinite fuel. But it does manage to be aerodynamicly stable even with the wings placed back like that, and I did include 4 functional missile launchers. It actually flies surprisingly well.

Sorry, I've been loving XCOM 2 too much, but now that's out the way I can crash some more rockets and pretend that I really meant to do that.

I took my kids to the Pacific Pinball museum over the weekend and decided I'd collect some video to share. It's all recorded on an iPhone 4, so it's shaky and the sound is awful, but maybe you want to see this anyway. Before Space Invaders and PacMan Pinball machines were the game of choice, and though they were largely displaced new innovative machines continued to be developed to compete with what video games had to offer. The only company still producing new pinball machines is Stern with new tables costing about $6000. (They have a great youtube channel here http://www.youtube.com/user/sternpinballinc )
The museum is in Alameda, California and is open 7 days a week. Entry costs $15 for adults, $7.50 for kids and lets you play all the machines for free, they have over 1,000 in their collection, but only about 100 on display at once. They have a website with their own photos and blogs http://pacificpinball.org

Here's a quick report on it's capabilities and what to expect so you can prepare for this encounter. This is probably the biggest update yet with a completely rebuilt editor, 2 new versions of each space center building, MK3 Aircraft parts, biomes defined for every moon & planet, crew experience and skills, new mission types.
