Some BVM devices do not have a 1-way valve on their exhalation port; these devices will deliver suboptimal fiO2 to spont. breathing patients. To test your device:
1. Cut off the bag portion of the BVM with a knife or shears
2. Occlude the part you just cut off with your hand
3. Try to breath through the part the mask would normally attach to
4. If you can take breaths (as in the video) then your bvm doesn't have a 1-way valve on exhalation port. This type of BVM should only be used with a PEEP valve (even if set to zero) on spont breathing patients.
