Welcome to the 46th episode of the Hagwon Startup Podcast. In tonight's episode I will be briefly talking about why it is important to not be on your own when starting up a hagwon, particularly as you are moving from a gongbubang to a hagwon operation.
Normally the intro that follows goes thus:
I am an Expat with close to a decade and a half of ESL experience. I operate a private language school franchise in the city of Ulsan, South Korea and know a thing or two about starting and operating an ESL business in South Korea. In this podcast I share some of my ideas and knowledge with a wider audience and also hope to learn new things along the way. I hope to provide our viewers with insights on how to start a Hagwon in South Korea, discuss some pitfalls and success stories, and bring an overall awareness to the beginning and running of innovative companies.
Teaching English in Korea comes with a lot of challenges for both the teachers and owners. In discussions with our guests I try to cover as many topics related to Hagwon Startups and teaching English in Korea as well as globally as our combined experience of this field allows.
As the Living Korea channel matures, and the Hagwon Startup Podcast chugs along, my goal is to include more episodes, in which I get to talk to interesting people doing exciting things in South Korea, outside of their regular teaching professions.
Do expect the unexpected though, as we do not shy away from off-
topic conversation.

We are under semi house arrest, as the Wuhan Virus took hold of the Korean peninsula, and although the last few days had seen a lessening in the number of reported cases of the Novel Corona Virus, the fear of contracting this intimidating virus strongly persists within the local population.
In order to keep ourselves entertained, here are some things that we do. I torn between being happy for the time given which I can spend with Malli and Liam and the obvious financial losses we are presently taking as a result of having to shut down our language school.
The 23rd of March is the date on which all schools are said to start operations again, but only time will tell whether that is something that will actually come true. If the number of reported cases continue to drop as is happening at the present moment, then perhaps the 23rd will indeed prove to be that magical number, that magical day. Lets hope for the best.

That time we ate beef was during a visit to a restaurant in the Bennekkoll valley near Miryang. The food was good, it was beef so why wouldn't it be good, but the location was all the rage.

All COVID-19 restrictions lifted except for masks in South Korea. The long awaited end is near, and the only thing that's standing in the way of utter and complete freedom is a thin piece of fabric separating us from the fresh air of the inner city.

About me:
I am an Expat with close to a decade and a half of ESL experience. I am the Franchising Director for Shane English Korea based out of Uslan, South Korea and know a thing or two about starting and operating an ESL business. I have also lived in South Korea since 2005, and although far from an authority figure on the cultural intricacies of the South Korea, I have some basic understanding of why things are the way they are, which I hope to share with those willing to listen.
In the Korea Podcast I share news pertaining to life in South Kroea as well as the cryptocurrency market here on the penninsula.
The most recent focus of the podcast has been on interviewing expats who reside in South Kroea and spend their livelihood doing things beyond teaching. With that I hope to bring some insight into the possibilities open to expats living and working in South Korea, beyond teaching.
Over the past 144 episodes, I have had the pleasure of sitting down with some pretty interesting individuals and I hope to continue this for the foreseable future.

Another Tuna fishing Trip, was the last fishing trip of last year. I didn't manage to catch a tune but Jon did and many others on the ship did. Seems that the best time was at around 5:30, during our first stop when the sun was just peaking over the horizon. That first stop allowed people to catch tunas left and right.
But I'm not complaining. There were plenty of Spanish Mackrel, fun to catch and delicious to eat.

Hydrogenated Cars Taking Over South Korea, is a reality. Apparently the government hopes to have 80,000 vehicles out on streets by 2022. I assume that the grants the government presently offers will be eliminated entirely or if not, then the competition to get them will clearly become a lot stricter.

Korean Parks - Daewangam Park 대왕암공원
Living Korea
Daewanngam park is located in Bangojin.
Daewangam Park is a seaside park located on the east coast. A 1-km trail leads to the seashore after passing through a forest of pine, cherry trees, magnolias, camellias, apricots, and forsythia. The seaside is littered with weathered rocks carved into interesting shapes by the wind and ocean. Another stroll path leads to a view of the Ulgi Lighthouse.
The park is also home to Daewangam Island, a large rock island that looks like a dragon rising up into the sky. It is connected to the mainland with an iron bridge and has an observation tower.
Daewangam Park is a resting place in Ilsan, Dong-gu in the city of Ulsan.[1] The total area covers 942,000 square metres (10,140,000 sq ft), and there is a sand field in Ilsan Beach next to the park. Daewangam Park is famous for its lighthouse the guidance of the 'Ulgi'. From the entrance to the park to the lighthouse, there is a 600-meter-long pine forest spanning.[2][3] On the beaches of Daewangam Park, there are huge boulders of rock formations that look like prehistoric dinosaur fossils are lying down. At the end of the park, there is Daewangam. Daegwanggyo Bridge, which connects land and Daewangam, was built and donated by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. in 1995.
At night, a subtle neon light encloses surrounding the Daewangam and creates a unique atmosphere. In connection with the scenic beauty of the night, Daewangam Moonlight Festival has been held since 2012. Daewangam Moonlight Festival is a representative cultural event of Ulsan Dong-gu, which is held every year since 2012. Usually, it opens at Daewangam Park during the evening of September to October. In 2017, the event was titled 'The Hundred Years of Light meets the Thausand Years of Sound.' It is performed various cultural performances such as Si-nangsong, dance, and singing. And after the performances, 'Walking along the moonlight' is proceed. There are about 1000 participants attending the event.[4]
And Daewangam Solbaramgil walking festival has been held in 2017. It is a walking festival hosted by Ulsan Dong-gu, the theme of "Let's be drunk with the scent of pine trees and waves." The walking course is 4.1km long and walks from Daewangam Park to nearby Ilsan beach. Around 1,300 people attend this walk festival.[5]
This Daewangam has a legend about the 'Queen of Munmu', the Silla Dynasty. The Queen of Munmu passed away after his husband(King Munmu)'s death. And, she reportedly lost at sea to become a dragon to protect donghae.
