Split phase compressors and PTC start devices in modern refrigerators
While we don't like to rely on ohms testing as appliance technicians, those tests have their place -- such as if you want to identify a split phase compressor's start and run windings.
To do so, you have to have a little bit of knowledge about how split-phase compressor windings are arranged, and what their specifications are. Fortunately for you, that's exactly what we teach in this excerpt from one of our many full-length technical training webinars. Give it a watch!

March 12, 2012: Hiked up Crawford Path with the Oz Man to Mt. Ignatius (which some people still call by its statist name of Eisenhower). Still plenty of snow but very warm at a balmy 30F.

In this year-end vodcast, Samurai Appliance Repair Man and the Mrs. Samurai do some reminiscing about all the great students we’ve worked with during 2015, the new features we’ve added to the Samurai Tech Academy's state-of-the-art online appliance repair training courses and we describe even more improvements coming in 2016!
New features already in place:
- Midterm exam with open answers in Fundamentals: challenging, enlightening, empowering.
- Weekly live webinar “Office Hours” with the Samurai for students: powerful presentations and illuminating Q&A.
Exciting announcement: even though we’ve increased the features and benefits of the Academy, the tuition is NOT increasing! Instead, we have changed to a continuing access fee model. When you enroll in a course, you receive full access for 1 year (2 years if you purchase a bundle), then you can opt to continue paying a very small monthly fee for access after that time period. (Note: this does not affect students who have already enrolled.)
More flexibility in 2016: we are changing the nature of the quizzes - they will no longer be “blocking” - leaving it up to each student to personalize their learning experience.
Oh, one more thing… In our enthusiasm to describe all the exciting goings-on at Master Samurai Tech, we forgot to mention our year-end tuition special! D’OH! Use coupon code SUPERTECH2016 at get a 10% tuition discount off any Samurai Tech Academy course or course bundle! This coupon is good through January 6, 2016.
Merry Christmas!

You'd be amazed at the places these little critters get into. The real question is: why did this guy decide to squeeze himself between a control board and the oven chassis, a space of about 3/4"? Last decision he ever made!

You press the button on a Whirlpool dryer and the start button makes a weird humming sound but the motor doesn't start. Obviously bad start button, right? Green techs and customers may think so but, oh, how wrong they would be. Watch the Samurai explain what's going on using the schematic.

In this webinar, we covered a range of electric circuit topics commonly encountered in appliance repair. This excerpt focuses on alternating current basics. Other topics covered in the full webinar:
- Neutral vs. Ground in AC circuits.
- Deciphering some fuzzy instructions in a service bulletin for a Whirlpool inverter microwave where we had to figure out how to test the digital data input to the inverter.
- From there, we talked about digital data communications in appliances using a Samsung dishwasher as an example.
- We also talked about loading down in DC loads, the troubleshooting technique we would use to test for this, and why loading down is not an issue affecting AC loads.
- AC loads and switches have their own special way of failing that we as techs need to be aware of: failing under load. We talked about why we don't trust ohms testing for AC loads and switches.
- Finally, we talked about how a high resistance connection (less than 5 ohms!) at a thermostat in an electric dryer can cause long dry times by robbing wattage from the heating element. We used Ohm's Law to show how this happens.
