Guitar music for sushi restaurants - Your garlic pepper tuna sashimi never tasted so good!
We used to go to a sushi restaurant that played jazzy guitar instrumentals, and this reminded me of it. I miss the garlic pepper tuna sashimi. They took it off the menu and we never went back This is another track from my album 'Songs from the isolation track', recorded back on March 14, two weeks before my brain aneurism. I will continue catching up to my backlog of home recordings that have been going almost daily this year.
I've started a new feature on my patreon level 'The art of zen guitar'. I started with general advice videos, now I'm adding full guitar lessons. I am showing a ten minute segment here of a full 45 minute lesson on 'Down to the waterline' by Dire Straits.
This is different and cheaper than my direct lessons level with one to one instruction over zoom. The $20 a month level will give you access to my advice videos, as well as full 45 minute lessons breaking down a song in all details, rhythm as well as solos. Very thorough! I'm doing lessons no one else on youtube is doing, and if they are, certainly not on the same level of detail. My first full lesson was 'lowdown in the street' by ZZ Top and NO ONE on youtube has ever made a lesson for this classic song! I also don't use alternate tunings, so you learn the song in standard tuning, which is a skill that I started very early. I also STRESS improvisation. It's all well and good to copy other players, but you must get away from that as soon as possible. If the chord is a B minor, play your own thing. In this example of down to the waterline, you can play what knopfler does in the opening, but why? It's already been done, express yourself! Nothing is easier than soloing over minor chord progressions.
You will learn the song exactly the way I play it, and I don't do anything half assed. The goal is to gain command of fingerstyle techniques, rhythm work and lead work, often combining them. Most guitar lessons on youtube are strictly stuck on 'guitar parts' only, which to me has always been very boring. You should learn the entire song, starting with the bass line. You should be able to play bass lines as well as vocal melodies and the guitar parts and switch from rhythm to lead fills. It's fun to learn keyboard parts or horn parts on guitar. This increases your knowledge as 'non guitar players' play in totally different ways. You want to get out of the cliches of guitar players? (Even Knopfler employs massive cliches in his playing) Learn horn solos. When I learned 'touch me' by the Doors, I played the horn solo on guitar. An eye opener!
This is especially important if you are a solo guitar player and don't have a band. I learned all this while playing in instrumental bands and doing street shows. Filling out the songs by playing all parts of the song. This makes it much more interesting and fun.
If you join the $20 a month 'art of zen guitar' level on patreon, you get access to all guitar lesson content. You can even pick one song a month and I will make a lesson on that song. I keep adding lessons for songs that I love playing, and haven't been done to death on youtube. All these videos will never be published on youtube so you'll be part of an exclusive club, getting full tuition on your favori

August 26/23. I think this could be the main reason I don't get many tips anymore. It's not lack of cash, or interest. People can't believe what they see and hear is REAL. This is not an isolated incident. I have one video with 8 million views of a guy screaming at me 'You're not doing that!". I talked to a couple the other day who were filming me. The guy said his girlfriend did not believe I was playing. They were normal, not drunk, not stoned. This could be happening a lot more than I know because I don't get to talk to everyone who ignores me. Maybe half of these pedestrians think I'm a scam. I was wondering why people don't even look when I play behind my head for ten minutes. Why should they? It's fake! Maybe I should play more stupid. The problem is I am trying to play well, and I get better each day I'm on the street, but it's hurting my income. Other people said they heard me from a distance and thought "This must be a recording."
This is a clip of my tribute to Bernie Marsden of Whitesnake who died last week at age 72. It debuts as a live chat on my birthday, August 30. I jam two songs from his time in the band, one from 1981 and one from 1982, which was their biggest hit, years later.

This was a first. Man tries to tip me by attaching the money to the headstock of my guitar, but it doesn't work. He then hands me the $5. Says I should be working with Hendrix. Probably too late for that!

2 days after this jam end of March, my brain exploded. 2 weeks in hospital, now back home. Still tired, getting atrophied muscles back in shape. Managing a 2k walk every couple days. No headaches, appetite is good, sleeping 8 hours a night. I was very lucky to survive, and I thank all of you for your support. I’ve still got some time!

You know what keeps my brain happy? Playing a different phrase every bar for 90 minutes. It’s the ultimate workout., the ultimate challenge. Any monkey can solo for 16-32 bars. Try for an hour and still keep it interesting.
The longer I play, the better it gets. It is such a natural high to feel ideas coming out of you at such a rapid pace, it is almost indescribable unless you actually play an instrument and don’t use tab s, notes or memorization of anything. Playing cover songs can be fun, writing songs can be fun, but it is nothing like creating on the spot, with zero prep. I would like to see my brainwave patterns while immersed in the middle of this improv bath. The neurons must be lighting up the sky. I literally cannot even speak or think straight for an hour after I’m done. It is the absolute closest I have ever come to living in the moment. When you can snatch this solo, time for you to leave...
