Lacan Contra Foucault: Subjectivity, Sex, and Politics
Author: Nadia Bou Ali File Type: pdf Lacan Contra Foucault seeks to ground the divergences and confluences between these two key thinkers in relation to contemporary philosophy and criticism. Specifically the topics of sexuality, the theory of the subject, history and historicism, scientific formalization, and ultimately politics. In doing so, the authors in this volume open up new connections between Lacan and Foucault and shine a light on their contemporary relevance to politics and critical theory. **Review Taking us back and beyond the misleading cultural theory debate between structuralism and poststructuralism at the end of the twentieth century, this book sets the record straight, revisiting crucial discussions of knowledge, truth and causality and refining the conceptual agenda for an exciting path forward still available today and more salutary than ever. James Penney, Professor of Cultural Studies and French & Francophone Studies, Trent University, Canada Too often these two titans of 20th Century French thought have been treated in parallel, like train tracks that move in the same direction but never intersect. Lacan Contra Foucault addresses this with excellent chapters by renowned thinkers that highlight points of contact and divergence psychoanalysis and sexuality, structuralism and Marxism, knowledge-power and the politics of subjectivity. An indispensable collection that puts our thinking about these two figures on new tracks! Colin Wright, Psychoanalyst and Associate Professor of Critical Theory, The University of Nottingham, UK. font face=Segoe UI, serif size=2This volume expounds the influence of Robert Burnss reading of Philosophy on his life and work, supplementing this with his personal encounters with those philosophers he met. The work begins with the Homespun Philosophy of his early years under the tutelage of William Burnes and John Murdoch, then examines in detail some of the texts of John Locke, Adam Smith and Francis Hutcheson, including other writers who reflect Hutchesons thinking. Further chapters include the exploration on Thomas Reid, Dugald Stewart, Archibald Alison and William Greenfield. Robert Burns and the Philosophers does not purport to be a work of philosophy but rather to show the poets reaction to the subject and the development of his understanding. In Eros and Revolution, Javier Sethness Castro presents a comprehensive intellectual and political biography of the world-renowned critical theorist Herbert Marcuse (1898-1979). Investigating the origins and development of Marcuses dialectical approach vis-a-vis Hegel, Marx, Fourier, Heidegger, and Freud as well as the central figures of the Frankfurt School Horkheimer, Adorno, Neumann, Fromm, and Benjamin Sethness Castro chronicles the radical philosophers lifelong activism in favor of anti-capitalism, anti-fascism, and anti-authoritarianism together with Marcuses defiant revindication of global libertarian-socialist revolution as the precondition for the realization of reason, freedom, and human happiness. Beyond examining Marcuses revolutionary life and contributions, moreover, the author contemplates the philosophers relevance to contemporary struggle, especially with regard to ecology, feminism, anarchism, and the general cause of worldwide social transformation. **

This book illuminates the fascinating life of Eva Gore-Booth. Often lost in the shadow of her more famous sister, Constance, Eva finally emerges as a key figure. Historian Sonja Tiernan has written an exciting and vibrant life of this extraordinary woman, at once an intrepid feminist, pacifist and advocate for social justice.Professor Maria Luddy, University of Warwick This is the first dedicated biography of the radical Irish writer and political activist, Eva Gore-Booth. A vast body of material from private collections and state archives has been used to uncover this remarkable life history. Born into West of Ireland Anglo-Irish landed gentry, Gore-Booth dramatically rejected her aristocratic heritage, choosing to live and work amongst the poorest classes in industrial Manchester. Her pioneering work on behalf of barmaids, circus performers, flower sellers and pit-brow lasses is traced here with clarity and enthusiasm. The story of Gore-Booths life is captivating and provides new insights into key political issues of early twentieth century Ireland and Britain. A prolific author who enjoyed a place within W.B. Yeats literary circle, Gore-Booth also fostered a well-deserved reputation as a determined and successful political activist, at one stage defeating no less an adversary than Winston Churchill. This ground-breaking book reveals Gore-Booths experiences of militant pacifism during the Great War, her campaign to reprieve Roger Casements death sentence, her instrumental role in the fight for sexual equality in the English workplace and her unwavering struggle for Irish independence. Her close bond with her sister, Countess Markievicz, an iconic and sometimes divisive Irish nationalist, offers the reader a new dimension into Markieviczs personal life. Comprehensive and engaging, this book establishes Eva Gore-Booth as a significant player in Irish and British politics and as a major figure in literary, womens and trade union history. **

Luis Bunuel (1900-1983) was one of the truly great film-makers of the twentieth century, his films invariably included in the critics lists of the top 100. Born in the Spanish village of Calanda and shaped by a repressive Jesuit education and a bourgeois family background, he reacted against both, escaped to Paris, and was soon embraced by Andre Bretons official surrealist group. His early films are his most aggressive and shocking, the slicing of the eyeball in Un Chien andalou [1929] one of the most memorable episodes in the history of cinema. Subsequently, Bunuel worked in Mexico where, in spite of tight budgets, he made films as memorable as The Forgotten Ones [1950] and He [1952]. From 1960, greater financial and technical resources allowed him to make, in Spain and France, the films for which he is best known Viridiana [1961], Belle de jour (1966), Tristana (1970), The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie [1972], and That Obscure Object of Desire [1977]. Although the French films in particular are less aggressive and more ironic than his early work, they nevertheless reveal Bunuels continuing preoccupations sex, bourgeois values, and religion. In this study, Gwynne Edwards analyses Bunuels films in the context of his personal obsessions and suggests too that, in contrast to many of his fellow artists, he experienced a degree of sexual inhibition surprising in a surrealist.About the AuthorGwynne Edwards is a lecturer in Spanish at University of Wales.
