Having no place to tell his brand of dark and dirty jokes in the politically correct climate of Vancouver, and knowing that there was a thirst for it, Mark Hughes created Comedy Shocker: a “safe space” for anything-goes humour. The first show was in April 2014 at the Havana Theatre. The 60 person venue sold out and people had to be turned away at the door. The hunt was on for a new venue. This venue was the Fox Theatre (a former porn theatre, of course). But, 4 days before the show, the Fox Theatre backed out, citing the content of the show was something they did not want to be involved with: “Disgusting…and probably illegal.” The last-minute venue was changed to the Sin Bin, which saw a run of 3 consecutive sold out crowds (100 people this time). Again, people were being turned away at the door. Since March 2015, the Comedy Shocker’s Vancouver home has been the Rickshaw Theatre. The first show had over 200 people attend to watch comedians pull out their darkest, dirtiest and funniest material.
