Kunekune Pigs Get Outside Today Another light video for today, and since its been so nice out the kunekune pigs get some time outside as the snow melts. We have been very pleased with these little pigs since we first brought them home last year, and continue to enjoy their laidback personalities. They are a very easy to handle small breed which makes them enjoyable to work with on a small farm. We are looking forward to piglets some time this spring!

Single Seed Challenge 2021 End of Our Yellow Pearshaped Tomato Experiment
Well it's October and the garden is coming to an end. And that means its the end of our single seed challenge experiment for our yellow pearshaped tomato. We got this variety from @Gardening in the North as part of the 2021 Canadian Seed Challenge and its a winner in out books!
The single seed challenge is a great way to learn about new varieties of vegetables and plants and the tomato has to be the poster child for this challenge as you only need one plant to produce seeds for future expansion!
We hope you enjoyed our look at this variety as part o the challenge and if you get the opportunity to ad the yellow pear shaped tomato to your garden we highly recommend it!
Thanks for watching!

We are pressure canning a favorite recipe homemade minestrone soup. This recipe is a great way to use up cabbage as it uses a fair bit and preserve it through pressure canning for later use.
Recipe:
2 medium onions, coarsely chopped
6-8 cups shredded cabbage
3 medium potatoes, diced (about 1 pound)
2 cups chopped carrots (4 medium)
1-1/2 cups chopped, trimmed fresh green beans (about 6 ounces)
1 lb package of navy beans (sorted, rinsed, and soaked overnight in a bowl of water to at least 2 inches above beans)
1 cup chopped celery (2 stalks)
2 Tablespoons dried basil, crushed
2 teaspoons dried oregano, crushed
1 1/2 to 2 quarts home canned chicken broth
1 quart stewed tomatoes
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
Thanks so much for watching!

From Harvest to Pantry | Turning One Weekends Harvest Into Winter Food Storage
This was a fun and useful video to make. We wanted to see how one weekends harvest could be turned into winter food stores. Of course we did eat some fresh veggies from the harvest but for the most part they went into various items to be stored in the pantry. It seems like a lot of food but when you look at how much one human eats over the course of a year this is just a drop in the bucket! Good thing we have more harvesting to do!

Easy Way to Start Pepper Seeds
Well we have been saying for the last week that we need to start some pepper seeds so we buckled down and did it! This is the way we find works best for us to start peppers which can sometimes be a bit finicky. Its a super simple method if you have a heat source (such as a wood stove) and uses very little in the way of materials.
Anyways spring and gardening season is now one step closer!

Getting More From Your Celery | Growing Celery At Home
Celery is a staple in a lot of recipes but its a bit on the harder side to grow successfully Its slow to grow from seed and often has sporadic germination. As an annual put and take vegetable it is not everyone's list for the garden. But if you can get some growing it is a very touch plant which can produce a lot more than just a single harvest of stalks and leaves. Celery can produce so much more!
We hope you enjoy this video and maybe think about adding celery to the garden roster in the future!

Homestead Economics 2021: Growing Vs Buying | Is It Cheaper To Grow Your Own Food?
Today is our last episode in our 2021 economics series looking back at the past year. And this time we are looking at overall expenses vs what we saved growing our own food and if the cold hard numbers added up to growing food being cheaper than buying food. Ultimately cost is not the only factor we consider when growing our own food nor should it be but though most of us wish it was not a constraining factor on our homesteads for most of us its still a factor to consider. Of course we were not perfect in 2021 growing only about half of what an average family of four in North American consumes (and that's not getting into the debate if we should all eat a little less...) but its still an interesting exercise to go through! We hope you enjoyed our homestead economics series for 2021, and hopfully this video will give you food for thought, or thought for food in growing vs buying and if it is cheaper to grow your own food.
Thanks so much for watching!

We hope you enjoy this video on handling and banding geese.

We have been talking about sprouting seeds for some time and today we are showing you the results of our first experiment. We have sprouted turnip kale and cabbage seeds from our previous seed harvests as well as a bonus of mung beans. Join us for a peek into the process and some of our preliminary results both on sprouting seeds from these brassicas but also on our thoughts moving forward with sprouting seeds in a jar to eat as part of our regular diet.
