The FreedomBox project was founded on February 5th, 2010 when Eben Moglen delivered a speech titled, "Freedom in the Cloud." On November 16th, 2019, the FreedomBox Foundation and Software Freedom Law Center co-hosted a hackathon to commemorate the upcoming ten-year anniversary of the FreedomBox project's founding. At the hackathon, Eben Moglen delivered a speech in which he discussed the past ten years of FreedomBox and the future of the project.

The talk in this video goes over the history of the internet, how it was designed, and how far removed it has become from its original design. Moglen goes over how modern monopolies have created a new ecosystem for themselves which infringes on user's rights 24:7 and contributes to the surveillance state. The FreedomBox is an effective solution which keeps users' data with users, and not at giant data centers, offering solutions that replace proprietary cloud services and centralized networks.

It works by setting up a mini home-server to provide federated apps, and runs using free and open-source software.
